Dorothy "Dot" Joyce Turner Atchison passed away peacefully October 18th, 2025, in Birmingham, Alabama at the age of 88. Dot was born January 29, 1937, in Jackson, Alabama to Laura Irene Ezell and Almon Cary Turner Sr.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her Husband of over 53 years, David Carl Atchison; and brother, Almon Cary Turner Jr.
She is survived by her three children: Dr. Joycelyn Atchison (Dr. James P. Bailey), Almon Atchison (Rosalind Hall), and Traci Turley (Michael Turley); and her grandchildren who were affectionately known as "The Girls": Dr. Margaret Bailey (Bruce Dietterle),
Lyra Bailey, Emily Atchison McCarthy (Brax McCarthy), Anna Atchison Stringer (Zakk Stringer); and great grandson August McCarthy.
Dot was a Graduate of JHS Class of 1955 and attended Nursing School at Charity Hospital in NOLA until she married Carl. Over the years She enjoyed attending the many reunions of both of their graduating classes.
In addition to being a full-time mother to her children, she found her life's work in the preparation of taxes for her clients and was the original owner of Atchison Business Center.
She served Multiple terms as a National Board Member of the National Association Tax Professionals (NATP) & a past President of their Alabama Chapter.
As an Enrolled Agent (E.A.) with the IRS, she taught classes nationwide on various aspects of tax preparation and served on an advisory panel to the IRS on multiple occasions.
Until moving to Birmingham in recent years, she was a resident of the Salitpa community and was very active in various civic and church organizations with River Hill Baptist Church and later Evergreen Baptist Church. She established treasured relationships with many of those she encountered both personally and professionally.
She was a lover of animals - Especially her cats "Kit & Kat" and her little dog "DeeDee".
She traveled extensively, was an avid reader, and enjoyed sewing, crafting, and painting at various times throughout the years.
Services will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Lathan Funeral Home Chapel at 11 AM. Visitation will be 10-11 AM. Interment to follow at the River Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make donations to the River Hill Cemetery Fund or the White-Smith Memorial Library in Jackson.
