Dorothy Fay Gibbs Gattis
Dorothy Gattis, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and sister, passed away on May 30, 2024, at the age of 89. She was born on October 16, 1934, in Georgetown, Texas to Edna and C.B. "Bear" Gibbs and was welcomed by her older sisters, Nancy and Robbie. As she grew, 3 brothers and 3 sisters were added to the family. There wasn't much money, but there was lots of love in their family.
Graduating from Georgetown High School, Dorothy Gibbs was the Class of 1952's Salutatorian. She then continued her education at Southwestern University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. She started her teaching career teaching junior high math in Hutto; she also taught math in Austin and Georgetown. As a teacher, she was the Chairman of the Math Department at Burnet Junior High in Austin and at Georgetown Junior High in Georgetown, where she was known as a tough but fair teacher. Dot was proud of the fact that she had ex-students come up to her and thank her for being their teacher.
While at Southwestern, she had a room in downtown Georgetown. With no car, she walked to and from Southwestern to attend classes. One day, a young man pulled over and offered her a ride. Though she did not know his name, she knew he had graduated with her older sister. She accepted the ride, discovered the young man's name was Carl (Sonny) Gattis, and married him on June 21, 1954. They had two children, Carl, Jr. and Jeanne; they remained together until Carl died on January 1, 2019.
Dorothy loved her family unconditionally. She nurtured not only her own children, but loved and cherished her nieces and nephews as well. Each and every one was special to her and she did her best to make sure they knew.
Dot is survived by her children, Carl Gattis, Jr (Julie), and Jeanne Reese (John), her grandchildren, Allen Reese, Cameron Gattis (Alex), Jacob Reese, and Travis Gattis (Amber) and great grandchildren Loken Gattis and Isaac Gattis, sisters Elnora Pounds, Dale Johnson, and Linda Pate, along with many much-loved nieces and nephews.
Dorothy is preceded in death by husband, Carl Wade Gattis, Sr., sisters Nancy Lambert and Robbie Dufner, brothers Curtis Gibbs, Donald Gibbs, and Charles Gibbs, and nephew Allan Gibbs.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Gibbs, David Gibbs, Doug Gibbs, Clifford Gibbs, T. J. Windhauser, Tim McKneely, and Honorary Pallbearers Thomas Windhauser and Robert Lambert.
