Born on June 18, 1939, in Colquitt Co., Georgia, she was the daughter of the late William T. Goodley, Sr., and Nellie Mae Schoppaul Goodley. Dorothy began her education at Central Elementary. After becoming totally blind, she continued her studies at the Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon, where she graduated in 1958. She went on to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), always determined to live a full and independent life. With the support and guidance of her loving mother, Dorothy learned to live independently in the very home she grew up in—a home that would remain a symbol of her strength and perseverance.
Dorothy was a dedicated member of the Lions Club since 1978, where she became widely known for her generous heart and tireless service. She received numerous awards for her participation in club fundraisers, including selling raffle tickets and candy, and supporting countless community benefits. Through the Lions Club, Dorothy was also able to obtain the guide dogs who became her trusted companions and symbols of her independence.
Many in the Moultrie community fondly remember seeing Dorothy walking to church and throughout town with her guide dogs by her side. Her first was Elsa, a German Shepherd, followed by Dusty, a Golden Retriever; Barnaby, a Yellow Labrador; Bambi, a Shepherd/Lab mix; Holly, a Black Labrador; and her final guide dog, Nellie, a Cream Labrador, who left her in 2012.
Dorothy was a faithful and independent woman of God who deeply loved her church family and friends. She will be remembered not only for her unwavering spirit and devotion to God but also for her kindness, courage, and the inspiration she gave to all who knew her. She was a member of First Methodist Church Moultrie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, William T. Goodley, Jr., and niece, Tammy Goodley Peterman.
She is survived by her nieces, Lisa Goodley Carr and husband Graeme of Victorville, CA and Janice Goodley Ward and husband Chris of Moultrie; and nephew, Tony Goodley of Ontario, CA; and a host of special friends and caregivers.
