Dorothy Gottfried Obituary

Dorothy Margaret Gottfried died on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Valley View Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Houston, Minnesota at the age of 98. Dorothy was born on July 30, 1926. She and her parents, John and Ida Klein, lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Dorothy married Peter Alexander Gottfried, Jr. on 14 May 1949. Together they raised four children in Milwaukee: Barbara Gottfried (Paul McHugh) of St. Paul, MN, Patricia Gottfried (James Gilson) of Green Valley, AZ, Gregory Gottfried (Rita Gohlke) of Waukesha, WI and Scott Gottfried (Michaeleen Bonner) of Houston, MN. Husband Peter and son Gregory preceded Dorothy in death. She is survived by her step son-in-law, Mark Gohlke, and six grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

Peter and Dorothy spent their later years in Winona, Minnesota where Dorothy’s strong faith compelled her to give back to the community. She did so with a quick and easy smile as friends and neighbors can attest. For over fifteen years she logged countless hours of volunteering for St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and Catholic Charities.

Dorothy will be deeply missed. She leaves behind the gift of many memories, particularly the special occasions she created around the holidays with her cookie baking, gift giving and delicious food. She was a talented knitter, voracious reader and fierce Scrabble player.

The family wishes to thank the Valley View staff and St. Croix Hospice staff for their loving and thoughtful care of Dorothy. There will be a service to honor Dorothy at 11am on Friday, March 14, 2025, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Winona, Minnesota. Visitation will be at the church from 10am – 11am. If so inclined, consider a donation in Dorothy’s memory to Catholic Charities of Winona, Minnesota.
