Dorothy Strickland Graves of Troy, Alabama, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 14, 2024. The graveside service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Locklar officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00am at Green Hills Funeral Home.
Born in 1932, in Autauga County, Alabama, Dot was the daughter of Henry Samuel Strickland and Ophelia DeRamus Strickland. Dot was one of 14 beloved children and was the last remaining sibling.  Her parents began as sharecroppers and in time became landowners as well as charter members of Indian Grave Baptist Church in Billingsley, Alabama. Dot became a Christian at an early age and would often faithfully walk over 3 miles to Sunday school alone through the woods carrying two pennies with her for an offering.
Dot earned her secretarial degree from Massey- Draughn Business School in Montgomery and began a career that was ongoing for over 20 years. While working she met her late husband, Walter C. Graves Jr., with whom she shared 53 years of marriage.  Dot loved spending time working in her flower beds and mowing the lawn. Even in her nineties, she could not walk by a weed and not stop to pull it up. She knew the true beauty of our world could be seen in the trees, grass, flowers, animals, water and sky the Lord had created.  She will be missed by all who loved and cared for her.
Loving survivors include her son, Alan Graves (Kathy); daughters, Lisa Graves Harrison, Patti Graves; grandchildren, Julia Harrison Tacuri (Kleber), Tyler Harrison (Krista); and her great granddaughters, Cassandra Wright and Theani Wright.  She also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Graves family.
