William Henry "Bill" Compton, Jr. of Troy, Alabama, passed away on February 21, 2026, at the age of 80. Born and raised in Selma, Alabama, Bill went on to lead a life marked by dedication to his family, friends, service to his country, and a distinguished career in heavy equipment operation and sales management.

Bill served honorably in the Marine Corps for nearly eight years, demonstrating a commitment to his country that infused his character throughout his life. Following his military service, he successfully transitioned into a career as a heavy equipment operator as well as in sales and management at industry-leading companies, John Deere and Caterpillar. He later worked in the construction sector with W. S. Newell in Montgomery, AL, where his skills and expertise were valued by colleagues and clients alike.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bill found joy in the simpler pleasures of life. He cherished outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing and made countless memories while spending time with family and friends. His love for music and penchant for telling jokes endeared him to those in his circle, making gatherings memorable occasions filled with laughter and companionship.

He is survived by his two sons, Hunter Compton (Shelia) and Jud Compton (Karen Sellers), as well as his grandchildren: Baine Compton, Barrett Compton, Josie Claire Compton, Brittany Shumack (Cris), Shawn Compton, Tyler Compton, Cole Sanders, Sheldan Sanders, and John Baxley Sanders. Bill was a great-grandfather to Bennett Shumack and Payton Shumack.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Sally and William Compton, Sr.; an infant son, William Compton III; and his sisters, Patsy Knox and Merle Godwin.
