Dorothy Johnson McCoy, age 89, of Surgoinsville, passed away on Friday, September 12, 2025 at her home surrounded by family.
Dorothy was born to Andrew and Bertha Shanks on August 16, 1936. She attended High Point School on Stanley Valley. She worked at Hawkins County Press for over 30 years. She was a believer of Jesus Christ and she loved the Lord. Nanny was the definition of the fruits of the spirit. She enjoyed being outdoors and enjoying God's creation.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Bertha Shanks; several siblings; first husband, Charles Johnson; second husband, Wayne McCoy; son, Charles Edward Johnson and wife Michelle; daughter, Deborah Lawson and husband Mike.
She is survived by her son Greg Johnson and wife Juliet; grandchildren, Jeremiah, Jessica, Joshua, James, Thomas (Callie), Jared, Julie (Jeff), Josiah, Stephen (Tara), Jared, Jheo, Jedidiah; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Mary Ferrell and husband JC Ferrell; and several nieces and nephews.
The family of Dorothy wishes to extend their sincere thanks to all the churches for their prayers and love. Also to SunCrest Hospice and her granddaughter, Jessica for the care they have shown.
Visitation hours will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, September 15, 2025 at Christian-Sells Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 pm with Gene Miller, Stephen Johnson, and Stevie Rogers officiating.
Graveside service will be held Tuesday, September 16, 2025 at 11:00 am in Bethel Church Cemetery on Stanley Valley Road. Anyone wishing to attend the graveside is asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:45 am Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
