On January 27, 2025, Dorothy Louise (Fowke) Rood, beloved mother, cherished friend, and devoted church member, passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 67, surrounded by her loved ones in Wichita, Kansas.
Dorothy was born on April 4, 1957, in Schenectady, New York and resided in Waterford, Connecticut, until 2019 before moving to Kansas. After retiring from her career as a dental hygienist, Dorothy's passion for motherhood inspired her to become a foster parent. She shared her love and home with over 15 children, including medically complex babies, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. Dorothy also loved music, singing, theater, gardening, baking, and tending to the birds that visited her yard. In quiet moments, she could often be found engrossed in a mystery or romance novel from her own personal library.
Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, guiding her in everything she did. Dorothy was a woman of unwavering devotion, actively participating in the United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry, Connecticut, and later the University Congregational Church of Wichita, Kansas. She shared her talents in the choir and music ministries, spreading warmth and encouragement to all who crossed her path. She was also an active and proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, where her generous spirit and sense of community shone brightly. Her welcoming smile, quick wit, and generous heart left a lasting impression, making everyone feel at home.
Dorothy leaves behind countless individuals whose lives were touched by hers-relatives near and far, and friends old and new. She is survived by her children: Philip Rood (wife Christina), Hannah Heath (husband Dylan), and her adopted son, Anthony Rood; her sisters Marion Sarkar (husband Ronnie) Judy Fowke, and brother Wesley Fowke; her brother-in-law Glen Beattie; and her nine nieces and nephews, as well as their children. Dorothy was also a proud grandmother to two grandchildren, Liam and Madilyn Rood, and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of a third grandchild in May.
Dorothy will join in heaven her husband, Carl Rood (2012), mother, Beverly (Farr) Fowke (2012) and father, Douglas Fowke (2006) who preceded her in death.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, 10 am at University Congregational Church located at 9209 East 29th St N, Wichita, KS 67226.
