Dorothy Shields Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by E. F. Boyd & Son Funeral Home - Cleveland on Sep. 3, 2022.
LIVESTREAMING via Facebook : University Church of Christ Cleveland,Ohio
Dorothy Lue Shields was born on March 6, 1946 to Inola and Clarence Whitmore in Nashville, Arkansas. Dorothy was reared by her grandparents Dorothy Von and Alonzo Vaughn. Dorothy was baptized at a young age at Cedar Pointe Church Of Christ. Dorothy graduated from Childress High School in 1964.
After high school, Dorothy moved to Lubbock, Texas with her sister and worked in a Beauty Salon, until she met the love of her life, Buford Elmer Shields (deceased) and married. This loving union would produce four beautiful children, Bradford Edwin (deceased), Burton Elliot, Barry Eugene and Belinda Elaine. The family would reside in Texas and Kansas until the opportunity for her husband to become the Minister at the University Church of Christ in Cleveland, Ohio in 1984. Dorothy was a loving, caring and servicing minister wife of the church until Buford's untimely death in 1991 and she continued to be a worker in the church. Dorothy would raise the family in Cleveland Heights, while taking a position at R. H. Meyers, where she would work until her death.
Dorothy Shields was truly loved and respected by both her family and church family very much. Her caring and gentle spirit would resonate to all she would have contact with. Dorothy was a very faithful Christian woman and remained an active member at University Church of Christ. Dorothy served God first and foremost in everything she did in her daily life. Dorothy enjoyed attending services just as much as she would spending time with her family. She was dedicated to her faith and nothing would deter her from doing so as her children would be well versed in saying "Momma isn't going to miss church, so we have to make plans for after" and they would be right because Dorothy would attend morning and evening services, singles retreats, supporting Sunday School teachers and working with the Ladies with Lady Day Events.
Dorothy was just as dedicated to attending church just as she was to spending quality time with her children. She enjoyed her many excursions with her daughter, Belinda and her grandchildren. If you saw Belinda, Dorothy was right there in the passenger seat. They would attend her grandchildren's many basketball, football and baseball games as well as the numerous trips to the Amish country, shopping and eating at - Barry's house where he would grill ribs and chicken at her request no matter how many times she would ask. He made sure his momma had her fill. Dorothy's family time got even bigger when the family would get together every month to have dinner, laugh and just enjoy family time. Dorothy's delight in her children was again never ending as she often would share with others how proud she was of the adults they had become and having their own families to raise that her morning talks with Burton before work were priceless and they made her work days brighter. She would often commented about having to drive now because she truly missed her personal chauffeur, Brad (deceased). Brad would happily take his mother a million places day or night and never complained a day because quality time would be spent with his mom. Dorothy will be missed by her children for she was and will always be their mom, best friend, faithful woman, confident and as Belinda says," The Love of her Life" and not to forget the calendar announcer to remind her children of upcoming birthdays and anniversaries to make sure they called each other. Dorothy's love shall resonate with each one that loved her forever.
Dorothy was a gentle soul with a ready sense of humor, positive attitude and above all a Christian woman. She loved her God and her family more than anything in the world. Dorothy, fondly called by Momma, Momma Dorothy and Dashee is survived by her siblings Helen Harris, Evelyn Keels, Bonnie Mosley, Harriett Little, Ralph Whitmore and JR Donaldson. Her loving children, son Burton Elliott Shields (Michelle), son Barry Eugene Shields (Angelique), daughter Belinda Elaine Shields and grandchildren Evan Sims (Alexis), Natasha Dumas (Wesley), Aaron Shields, Alycia Shields and Adrian Shields, Amir and Alex Shields, her great grandchildren, Evan Sims Jr., Avontae Sims, Daevon Sims, Aiden Sims, Azai Shields, Wesley Dumas Jr., Ashton Shields, Bailey Dumas, Cataleya Shields and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and church family. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Cartland Whitmore and Neva Young.

To the family and Friends of Dorothy Shields

We are made in God's image, spirit, we don't die we change and now Dorothy is living in ,her true self ,spirit.
I feel so blessed that God brought Dorothy and I together to share this journey here and now and when we crossover we will all see her again as our spirits meet on a different journey, time and place .
Dorothy was a bright light in a dark world and always had a smile, kind words, and was always ready to be of service to others, a true Christian woman, and a strong faith that we shared in Christ was/is a blessing here on earth to all and now a blessing from up above. Dorothy is a shining star and I will miss our talks and regret that I never made it to her church when she ask me to go, but know that you will be missed and what you taught me I carry in my spirit and share with others. Thank you for being you.
