Dorothy "Dottie" Stowe ObituaryDorothy Jane "Dottie" Phelps Stowe, 92, of Shelton, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025. A dedicated homemaker, wife and friend, Dottie will be remembered for her love of nature, her quiet strength, and her devotion to her family.
Born on November 27, 1933, in Gates, North Carolina, Dottie was the daughter of Walter Arthur Phelps and Annie Nora Taylor Phelps. A graduate of Gatesville High School, she continued her studies at the Stenotype Institute of Washington, D.C. She worked as a secretary in the office of the Clerk of the United States Tax Court in Washington, D.C., where she met and later married Warren Gilbert Stowe, who was then serving with the Fleet Marine Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
After their marriage, the couple settled in Oxford, Connecticut, where they built their home and their life together. Dottie was an active member of the Shoreline Retriever Club and was known for her deep affection for Labrador Retrievers. Her love of the outdoors carried through her life-from camping in the wilds of northern Quebec with her husband and their son, Charles, to competitive outdoor field trials with their friends Pat Perriello and Marilyn Smith. Dorothy and Warren enjoyed exploring the Northeast on motorcycle. They toured the Mohawk Trail, Cape Cod, and Lancaster, Pennsyvania.
In 1996, Dottie earned her associate degree in business and later joined Stop & Shop, where she worked until her retirement. She was a member of the Oxford United Church of Christ and the First Congregational Church of Derby.
Dottie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Warren, and her parents. She is survived by her son, Charles W. Stowe, and his wife, Deirdre, as well as a grandson, Andrew Wickenden, his wife Anna, and a great-grandchild, Georgina Mae.
Pastor Hal Hunt will officiate a memorial service at Riverside Community Church, 238 Freeman Rd., Oxford, CT 06478 on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 10 a.m., followed by burial at East Village Cemetery in Monroe. The Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 W. Church St.,
Seymour, CT 06483 has been entrusted with her arrangements.
The family wishes to thank Jane Pettway and her family for the intensive care needed to keep Dottie at home as long as possible. We also thank the management and staff of Shelton Lakes for the gentle and tireless attention to Dottie's changing needs. Finally, we thank Accent Care hospice caregivers, for their experienced and loving guidance through these last several weeks.
