Dorothy Jean White, 81, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born on February 25, 1944, in Wichita, KS, to Phillip and Doris (Mathews) Reed.
On March 7, 1964, in La Porte, IN, she married Larry Dean White, who survives. Also surviving are her 2 children, Randy (Tiffany) White of Western Springs, IL and Ann White of Seattle, WA; 5 grandchildren, Nicolas Koomen, Megan Koomen, London White, Saylor White, and Sterling White; as well as several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Barry Reed.
Dorothy worked many years as a nurse before she furthered her education to become a Nurse Practitioner. She taught nursing at Valparaiso University and had a Nurse Practitioner practice in La Porte. Dorothy was a member of the La Porte Hospital Retiree Club, several book clubs, and an Alzheimer's support group, which she led. She enjoyed making cards, traveling, and gardening. In her retirement, Dorothy taught nursing courses at Purdue North Central. She will be fondly remembered for her love of hot tea. Her love of nursing and caring for her patients was only surpassed by her devotion and love for her family.
Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service with the NWI Nurse Honor Guard will be held at 5 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
A time of visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's and Dementia Services of Northern Indiana, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46637.
