Robert G. Hickman, 88, of Kingsbury, passed away peacefully at 10:50 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2026 at Northwest Health in La Porte.
He was born on December 6, 1937, in La Porte, to Fred and Freida (Plohen) Hickman.
On June 9, 1960, in Kingsbury he married Jo Evelyn (Muncie) who preceded him in death.
Robert was a lifelong resident of the area and worked as a line men for Nipsco for over 30 years. He was also a volunteer for the Kingsbury Fire Department and was and assistant leader for Boy Scouts. Robert enjoyed many outdoor activities including canoeing and he was a member of the Canoe Association. He also enjoyed camping, kayaking, collecting Native American relics and arts, going to Mackinac, and deer hunting. Robert was also a talented woodworker making furniture in his wood shop. He loved dogs and was truly loved by those who knew him. Robert will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his children, Richard Hickman, Tim Michaels, Andrea R. (Donald) Poort and Melissa Hickman; grandchildren, Lorin J. (SueEllen) Hickman, Emily E, Hickman, Megan (Dan) Schergen, Alie Hicks, Brandon (Haley) Poort, and Dylan (Brittani) Poort; twelve great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Robert was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ralph Marvel, Ronald Hickman and James Hickman; grandson, Derrick Lashua; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Curry; great granddaughter, Ava K. Schergen.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m., until 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 12, 2026 at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, (219) 362-3333. Funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 a.m., with Tim Williams officiating, at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Kingsbury Cemetery.
