Douglas Roger Bidleman, 71, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022 in Rochester, NY. Doug is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Yolanda; sons Mark (Kim) and David (Amy); grandchildren Olivia, Andrew, Jack, and Lia; brother Don (Lynn), sister Sue (Leon) Rider; brothers-in-law David (Rose) Barber and John (Anne) Barber; his nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his angel nephew, Luke Rider. Doug was a camper, marathon runner, hiker, canoeist, angler, oil changer, DIYer, master whistler, lover of music, and teller of jokes, and the world simply will not be as bright without him.
Born on January 6, 1951 to Roger and Norma Jean in Medina, NY, Doug was raised in a loving home where family always came first. He grew very close with his brother and sister and managed to buck the curse of the middle child. At the age of 13 Doug developed a visual impairment that would change his life, but never define or limit his abilities. He was resolute in his determination to live the life he wanted and became a role model and inspiration to his family and friends.
Doug met Yo in college in 1970, and the two quickly became inseparable, with Doug hitchhiking from Avon to Rochester to spend time together. They were married in 1972, and by 1979 they were a family of four. Doug taught his boys the value of hard work and self-reliance. They looked up to him, literally and figuratively. He shared his love for the outdoors, spending summers taking the family camping to favorite spots like Rollins Pond and Kring Point, as well as many other natural gems. He was a proud "grampy" who loved to lift his grandkids to the ceiling, swing them in a blanket, and tell them his best (kid-friendly) jokes. Life was better in a canoe, hiking, biking, fishing, or running, and Doug loved those things the most when enjoying them with family. He was always moving.
Doug was a dedicated 42-year veteran of Hillside Children's Center where he began his career in 1972 as a childcare worker. Doug's path at "the hill" led him to human resources where he became a renowned crisis intervention trainer. He trained thousands of employees in techniques to help keep kids and staff safe. He became known for his sense of humor, dedication to the job, and compassion for kids in crisis.
Life threw Doug another challenge when he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2012. While the disease slowly took away the things he loved, it never took his spirit or his perseverance. He fought hard and admirably, without a complaint, and never stopped moving. The family would like to thank the many angels here on earth who helped Doug through his final years and days. Their compassion and love are immeasurable.
Doug's family will receive friends at the Harloff Funeral Home 803 South Washington Street East Rochester, NY 14445 on Thursday, December 1st from 4:00-6:00pm. His Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, December 2nd at 11:00am at the funeral home, those in attendance are encouraged to share stories about Doug's life.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Doug's memory can be made to Parkinson's Foundation or Hillside Foundation.
Doug's arrangements have been entrusted to the Christopher Mitchell Funeral Home, Albion, NY.

So, when I started at Hillside my name was Linda Bobbin (now Linda Green). I went to sign up for a training from Doug and when I told him my name he said, "What, Lorena Bobbitt?! I'd better be careful around here!" For many years I went through his restraint training classes. One year, in front of the class, he'd used me to help demonstrate a small child restraint (we all took turns as "the child" to help with the demonstrations). He told me to try as hard as I could to get out of the restrsint, and in no time at all I pushed back with my legs and we both did a somersault backwards . He was okay but kind of in shock. Everybody laughed, including Doug. He was truly a kind gentleman, great teacher, with a great sense of humor. May he rest in peace. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
