Douglas Bishop Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harrod Brothers Funeral Home & Crematory - Frankfort on Mar. 17, 2025.
Frankfort – Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather Douglas Ira Bishop, 79, of Frankfort, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home on March 15, 2025.
The youngest of three boys, Doug was born on May 16, 1945, in San Francisco, California, where his father was working in the naval shipyard. He grew up in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1963. He then attended Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky where he met his wife, Becky, before he was drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1968. Upon completing his military service, he and Becky moved to Frankfort, Kentucky in 1970. Doug taught at Peaks Mill Elementary School for two years, then began his career in state government at the Cabinet for Human Resources, while also earning his master's degree from Kentucky State University. He later worked for the Department of Information Systems and was serving as assistant director when he retired in 1998.
Doug was a devoted member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, taught bible study, and sang in the choir. He also served on the City of Frankfort's Code Enforcement Board, volunteered at the local food pantry, and participated in other civic activities. Known as Poppy to his beloved grandchildren, Doug loved traveling (especially vacationing in Charleston, South Carolina with his dear friends), hiking, cheering on his son and grandchildren in sports and other activities, and spending time with his family. He was also a history buff, especially military history, and a self-proclaimed, undefeated Trivial Pursuit champion.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Corinne Bishop, and brothers, Don and Joseph "Ray" Bishop. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Becky Bishop; son, Seth Bishop (Sarah); grandchildren, Avery, Eleanor, and Logan Bishop; and many extended family members and friends. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Frankfort. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. service time on Friday, March 21, 2025, at Immanuel Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bluegrass Care Navigators (www.bgcarenav.org) or Immanuel Baptist Church, 1075 Collins Lane, Frankfort, Kentucky, 40601.
