Douglas John Hannon age 83, husband of 62 years to Ursula Mae (Syriac) Hannon entered eternal rest on Monday, August 18, 2025.
Douglas was born in Ludlow, MA; son of the late John J. Hannon II and Helen V.
(Mulvihill) Hannon. Doug grew up in Westfield then moved to Southwick to raise his family and is where he lived for the past 60 years.
Douglas retired as a Building & Grounds Director for the YMCA, Westfield. After retirement Doug found part-time janitorial work for the Simsbury Public Schools. Some of his previous employment included working for the family detective agency, Grief Brothers, and the Variety Store- The Ranch House in Southwick that he and Ursula owned and operated for many years. Douglas held both a Real Estate Brokers and a Private Detective license.
Douglas had so many talents; it seemed that he was never idle and that there was nothing that he could not fix or do. Whether he was rebuilding and maintaining the family camp in Cummington Mass along with Ursula, or the many tasks and projects that they completed side by side at both their home and their little cottage in the woods. He definitely loved nature. Douglas had an enormous love for all animals, but particularly for all cats, he also enjoyed his weekly scratch lottery tickets, watching TV especially the older western type shows, country music and reading the daily newspapers. Doug was witty and had a good sense of humor.
Douglas honorably served his country in the United States Army for 3 years where his specialty was carpentry and he achieved recognition as a sharpshooter.
In addition to his loving wife, Douglas is survived by a daughter Deborah (Dan), son John, daughter Patricia (Joe) five grandchildren Derek, Cody, Joseph, Thomas & James and three great granddaughters Lily, Ally & Leah.
He had a special bond with his son-in-law Joe who was very compassionate, kind and patient with him, taking him on countless adventures driving around the area towns and visiting with him weekly. Douglas was known by many but most importantly as Husband, Dad, Grampy, Uncle Duck, Cousin, special neighbor and cherished friend and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents Douglas was predeceased by his two sisters Shirley and Kathryn and his brother Thomas.
At his request there will be no funeral services.
