Douglas Lee Klein, of rural Atwood, passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday November 28, 2024. Doug was born March 11, 1960, at Rawlins County Hospital Atwood, Kansas. He was the only child of Kendall Lee and DeeLores Fern (Franklin) Klein. Doug was raised on his parents’ farm west of Atwood, near the middle Beaver Creek. He lived in Rawlins County his entire life, graduating from Atwood High School in 1978. Doug attended Fort Hays State University, was a member of Delta Tau Alpha, honor society for the field of agriculture, and graduated Cum laude, in May 1982, with a degree in agriculture and an emphasis in beef cattle management.
It was at Fort Hays State University that Doug met Jan Leigh Mowry and they were married on August 14, 1982. To this union two sons were born: Heath Lee on February 7, 1986, and Cody Daniel on December 11, 1989.
Doug and Jan’s first home was once part of the Crystal Springs Ranch on the middle Beaver. In May 1985, they moved north of Atwood to Doug’s maternal grandparents’ place belonging to Benjamin Floyd and Mary Franklin.
Doug and his family were heavily involved in their boys’ school activities, sports, kid wrestling and Rawlins County 4-H. Doug was a Center Township Treasurer and trustee for many years, past Rawlins County Fair Board member and member of the Atwood United Methodist Church.
His grandsons Miles and Hudson were the apples of his eye, and he enjoyed watching them at their many activities from sports to 4-H.
Doug was proud to be part of a true family farm operation. Together, the family has been actively involved in raising cattle, alfalfa, silage, wheat, and milo.
Doug is survived by his wife of 42 years, Jan Mowry Klein; his son, Heath and wife Ami; grandsons, Miles and Hudson Klein; parents, Kendall and DeeLores Klein; sister-in-law, Stephanie Mowry Shrader and numerous family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son Cody Daniel Klein on November 21, 2007.
