Douglas Ries Obituary
Ries Jr., Douglas Alexander
Age 77, passed away on October 23, 2024, at home in Kennesaw, GA. Born on February 11, 1947, in St. Louis, Missouri, Doug led a life in service to his family, children's healthcare, and animal welfare.
Doug is survived by his wife, Sandra, and children Colleen (Jason), Kathryn (Terrence), Doug (Rocio) and grandson Gabriel, along with sisters Susan Meyer and Peggy Herning. He was preceded in death by his parents, Douglas A Ries, Sr and Anne Soraghan Ries, and sister Carol Catanzaro.
Doug grew up in St. Louis, Missouri and attended St. Louis Priory and Ladue High School. He graduated from St. Louis University with a BA in History/Sociology and an MHA in Health Care Administration. Doug served as the President of Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital for nearly 30 years. Upon retiring from Glennon, he transitioned to a leadership role within the SSM Health Care system, strengthening the relationship between SSM Health Care and St. Louis University. He cared deeply for all his colleagues but especially the patients, families, physicians and staff at Cardinal Glennon.
Doug worked hard to maintain a work/life balance and made sure never to miss a child's sports game or school event. He treasured his furry four-legged children, Casey (King Charles Spaniel) and Bitsy (Poodle Mix) which influenced his passion for animal causes. Rain or shine, you would find him out walking the dog or playing in the yard. Doug spent his retirement years in service to the Church as an Ecumenical Minister and holding numerous board positions within healthcare.
Services: Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 10, from 1:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m. at Bopp Chapel Funeral Home located at 10610 Manchester Road, Kirkwood, Missouri. A funeral mass will be held Monday, November 11 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Anselm Catholic Church located at 530 S Mason Rd, Creve Coeur, Missouri followed by a private burial. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital would be most appreciated. www.boppchapel.com
