Terry Ries Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Blank Funeral Company - Sunbury on Mar. 13, 2026.
Terry Lee Ries, 84, of 327 North Eleventh Street in Sunbury passed away in the early morning hours of March 12, 2026. Terry was born on June 7, 1941, to Alfred and Dorothy (Reitz) Ries. He married Carol Rohrbach and together they raised one son, Terry L. Ries, Jr. The next forty (40) years of his life were spent with his present companion, Cheryl Darrah. Together, with Cheryl's son, Matthew, they had many adventures, often involving train shows, flea markets and Special Olympic events that Cheryl's son attended.

Terry was an avid collector of American Flyer trains. He was a life member of the Train Collectors Association. He especially enjoyed attending the train shows in York with his brothers, Fred and Rod.

Terry was a graduate of Sunbury High School in 1959 and attended Williamsport Area Community College where he studied drafting. He became a draftsman at Kennedy Van Saun and continued working for Wood Metal Industries until his retirement.

Terry's hobbies included restoring Corvair's and collecting trains. He was a jack of all trades, especially at home. He could fix anything.

Terry is survived by his loving companion, Cheryl Darrah and her son Matthew, his beloved son, Terry L. Ries Jr. and wife, Brenda (Shambach) Ries, two grandchildren Brandi and fiancé Kevin of Harrisburg and Andrew and his wife Corey and their four children of Ephrata. Also surviving are brothers, Rodney and wife Maureen Ries of Selinsgrove, Fred and wife Sue, of Mt. Vernon, New Hampshire and sister, Pat and Morgan Reynolds of Hot Springs, Arkansas and several nieces and nephews.

A service for Terry will be held on Wednesday, March 18, at the Blank Funeral Home, 395 State Street in Sunbury. Visitation time will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Services will follow conducted by Mother Dina Ishler of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Sunbury.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.

The family would like to thank all of you who kept his spirits up and provided assistance and support in so many ways, especially to his dear friend, Ric Gargie. We owe special gratitude to the staff of Sunbury Skilled Nursing Center and Compassus Hospice who worked to make his last days comfortable. Thank you, Terry, for being a part of all of our lives. You will be missed.
