I worked with Doug few years back and continued to stay in touch even when moved on to other companies. Apart from being such a wonderful writer who could paint a picture with his words, he was a wonderful person. We used to exchange notes around holidays and when i didnt hear back last time I had been worried about his health. Anyway today I chanced upon this notification and I am really sorry and sad to hear about it. His family was really important to him and I hope they continue to uphold his legacy of strength and finding happiness in all that you do. Rest in peace Doug, will miss you.

Doug was one of my life's best friends. I imagine many people would say the same.
I'm usually full of words, but there is too little I know how to say. I'm glad we were back in touch, and I will miss him.

Suzanne,
I by chance saw your husband´s obituary notice and then Mimi sent me his essay from the Globe. I honestly think it has changed the course of my life in a way I haven´t quite figured out yet. Never have I read something so evocative yet so plainly put. I had to pause and put my head down and cry while reading it as he did with his Dad, as we all do when saying goodbye for the last time. Your husband captured the essence of humanity in those few short paragraphs. As I am well into the back nine, I appreciate him recording his gentle, naked truth. You were lucky to share your life with such a person. He sounded like a good man.

I read the piece in Sunday's Globe and went right to the blog. I have now read the entire blog, crying from time to time, especially knowing that Doug had died after all he went through. He is a beautiful writer, and his words will live on in the hearts of his readers. May your family heal and find peace in the love you shared with him and your precious memories.

I sat down to catch up on the Sunday Globe today. There it was: "The last thing my father told me". I wept. What a beautiful piece of writing. I didn´t know Doug, but I do know he loved his family dearly. Peace to all.

Doug, thank you for sharing your journey and your memories in 2 sides of a lifetime. I could not wait until a new chapter/story came out. I worked with Doug at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. I enjoyed his humility and kind way. He loved his family so much. Sending wishes for peace and comfort to you in the coming days, weeks, and years. Jen Kohl
