Douglas Wayne Smith
Doug was born in
Kingsville, Texas on January 13, 1950, and died in
Spring, Texas on February 23, 2024. His parents and four brothers moved from place to place as they grew up. As a kid, he loved to play sports, particularly baseball which his dad, Calvin coached. One year his team, the Cardinals, went undefeated after deciding not to wash their socks for an entire season.
At Spring Woods High School, Doug fell in love with his wife, Janette, in Civics class and her invitation to the Tigerette Ball. They were married in June of 1970 and became the loving parents of their two girls, Amanda and Alicia. Doug had a love for being outside his whole life doing anything from golf to fishing, hunting, sports, watching the sunset or riding on a tractor. He loved rock n' roll music from the 50's, 60's, and 70's.
He graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science. He started out in a Chemistry lab, however, his career was spent in sales of the oilfield industry.
During his 30's, Doug realized that he was missing something in his life even though he had a beautiful wife, loved being a dad, and a great career with lots of living it up. One day Doug asked his brother, Randy, where he got his peace and joy. He wanted to know why he lived his life the way he did, so Doug gave his life to Jesus and began to change the way he lived. Doug loved the Lord and would witness to anyone anywhere.
As a believer, he became involved in the Oilfield Christian Fellowship. He was active at Klein United Methodist Church in various ways like teaching Sunday school, being a lay leader, youth volunteer, and starting ministries like the "Love for Christ" homeless ministry based on scripture Matthew 25:34-36. They gave soup, socks and salvation. On his own he would take water bottles to the homeless on the street and then he and the youth started serving soup and sandwiches from a downtown parking lot. He also took youth for fellowship and Bible study at the homeless women's shelter, Star of Hope. Later they moved to Northwest Bible Church where he became an Elder, and while serving on the prayer team, wrote over 300 pages of devotionals, which you can obtain by request.
Doug loved the Lord, his family and his friends. His favorite place was their farm in Elkhart. He loved riding his tractor and creating trails that included signs with his grandchildren's names. He was active in proclaiming the love of Jesus, meanwhile simplifying his retirement time to take deep breaths in nature.
He is preceded in death by his parents Joyce and Calvin Smith. He is survived by his wife, Janette Bishop Smith, his children, Amanda Smith McNulty and her husband, Kamron McNulty, Alicia Smith Dodson and her husband, JD Dodson; his grandchildren, Tristan, Parker, Peyton, and Braelyn; his brothers, Rod, and his wife, Dianne, Randy, and his wife, Kathy, Rick, and Barry and his wife, Miranda. He also had numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation with a closed casket will be at 1pm with A Celebration of Life and Resurrection at 2pm on Friday, March 1st at Klein Funeral Home-Champions, 16131 Champion Forest Drive,
