Doug Smith of Irondequoit passed away at home on Thursday April 4, 2024. He will be remembered as a warm, kind, and loving father, brother, and husband.
He is survived by his wife Joan of 50 years; brothers, Steve (Terry) of Paonia, CO and Tom of Macedon, NY; as well as his two sons, Eric (Rebecca) of Manchester, CT and Earl of Greece, NY; and grandchildren, Grace, Aidan, and Lila of Manchester, CT; niece, Autumn Smith of Henrietta, NY; nephew, Justin (Kathy) Smith of Lamberton, MN; niece, Shanti Smith of Takaka, NZ; as well as brother-in-law, Harold Mackinder of Norton, MA; sisters-in-law, Carol Crain of Rochester, NY and Ruth Minert (Paul) of Portage, MI; nephew, Michael Mackinder of Norton, MA; niece, Lara Mackinder Bekampis of Mansfield, MA; nephew, Will Crain (Michele) of Rochester, NY; nieces and nephews, Mary Ellen (Jeff) Knickerbocker of Rochester, NY, Betsy Nowack of WY, Narina (Steven) Schultz of Canandaigua, NY, David Minert of Portage, MI, Doug (Amal) Minert of Portage, MI, Tanya (Dan) Huffman of Portage, MI, Tina Minert (Rachel) of Portage, MI; and many loving friends and other relatives.
Doug worked for many years as a Traffic Manager at Burke Forge in Rochester and as a Cashier at Wegmans in Irondequoit. He graduated from Brighton High School and the University of Michigan with a major in Math and statistics. He loved card games, spending summers with family on Canandaigua and Keuka Lakes, and watching the Buffalo Bills and UM football. Doug met his wife Joan at the Young Adult Fellowship (YAF) at Third Presbyterian Church in Rochester, where they later married in June 1973. Doug attended church at Northridge Church in Irondequoit.
A Memorial Service will be held at Northridge Church, 2052 St. Paul Street, Rochester, NY on April 29th at 11:00am. A private interment service for members of the family will be at White Haven Memorial Park in Pittsford, NY at 9:30am on April 29th. Family and friends will also gather at Keuka Lake in July for a service of remembrance. Donations may be made in his memory to a charity of your choice.
