Douglas Shad Smith, 59, Shelburn, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024, at his home after a brief bout with cancer. He was surrounded by his family and friends during his last days.
Doug was born May 2, 1965, in Sullivan to David and Nancy Smith. He was a 1983 graduate of North Central High School and attended Indiana State University. He was employed for many years as a graphic artist at the Sullivan Daily Times and was grateful to Tom and Nancy Gettinger for giving him a chance to develop his artistic talent. A lover of music, especially R.E.M., Doug played in the band Howitzer with his friends Ty Outcalt, Jack Street and Brent Tomey. He also enjoyed gardening, especially growing peppers -- from hot to sweet -- each year laying out his garden in a different pattern. He played baseball in high school and enjoyed showing his sons and grandson how to play the game he so truly loved. He was the kind of husband who would take his wife on spontaneous picnics or bring her a bouquet of flowers for no reason. Doug was a wonderful father, Pappy, husband, friend and co-worker who will be missed by so many people whose lives he touched.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Malayna McKamey Smith, Shelburn; three sons, Brice Johnson (and Lynnett Linsher), Palestine, Ill., Noah Wayne McKamey Jr. (and Kristi Daugherty), Rosehill, Ill. and Thomas Elliott (and Miranda Fowler), Terre Haute; five grandchildren, Auston McKamey, Chance Wilson, Patience Wilson, Noah Wayne Jr. and Paxton Douglas Elliott; his father and stepmother, David and Tina Smith, Linton; three sisters, Theresa (and Ross) Drown, Florida, Jessi (and Jeremy) Burress, Linton, and April Arflack Dilg, Tennessee; one brother, Adam (and Amanda) Smith, Linton; and his mother-in-law, Sandy Hyde, Hutsonville, Ill.
Preceding him in death were his son, Auston Clayton McKamey; his mother, Nancy Jean Smith; his grandparents who raised him, Pappy and Pauline Harris; one sister, Holly Smith; and one brother, Bryan Smith.
There will be no funeral services. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. Samaritan Funeral Home was entrusted with cremation.

I extend sincere prayers and condolences to Malayna and family on Doug's passing. We were friends and attended North Central High School together, Doug in the class of 1983 and myself in the class of 1984. I well remember enjoying late 70s / early 80s hit songs by Boston, ELO, Supertramp, and Kiss with Doug at his Shelburn home. I am very saddened to learn of his passing and especially at such as young age. I will miss Doug.

God Bless.
