Douglas Craig Wilson, Brigadier General Retired, South Carolina Army National Guard, and longtime resident of Oconee County, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the age of 77.

Doug Wilson leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and dedication that lives on in his children and grandchildren. He had a profound respect and compassion for all people, for his country, and for education. Born September 15, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and growing up in LaPlata, Maryland, Doug learned the value of hard work and respect for others from his father, Charles, his mother, Helen, and from his beloved Aunt Linda and Uncle Jim. He attended Clemson University, where he served the community as a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, became a lifelong Tiger fan, and later returned to earn his Master's Degree in Education.

Doug began his military journey in 1971 by enlisting in the Army National Guard. His distinguished 33-year career was defined by unwavering courage and a deep commitment to the nation’s defense. He notably served in Operation Noble Eagle following the attacks on September 11th, 2001. For his meritorious service and dedication, he was recognized with numerous decorations, including multiple Army Commendation and Deployment Medals.

Along with his service to our country, Doug was a respected educator and coach, inspiring young men and women with his unique mix of tenacity, humor, and compassion. In his 42 years of teaching, he never gave up on a student. Mr. Wilson or Coach, as his students knew him, taught at Westminster High School, Walhalla High School, and Tamasee-Salem High School in the upstate of South Carolina, during which time he also coached football, track, cross-country, and basketball. After retiring in South Carolina, he continued teaching in Stephens County, Georgia. His ability to inspire his students and players lives on in the many men and women who were blessed to find themselves in his classroom.

Doug’s service to others extended to his community beyond the classroom as well. Doug was an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and the Acts Sunday School Class, as well as the Seneca Golden Corner Rotary Club. In his later years, Doug participated in the Rock Steady Boxing program at the Foothills Area YMCA, joining in a worldwide community fighting back together against Parkinson’s Disease. Attending this class with the same level of dedication he gave to every area of his life, Doug credited the program with sustaining his mobility and his resolve, finding a powerful community that bolstered both his body and his spirit.

At home, Doug was a family man with a servant’s heart. From road trips across the country in the minivan to Saturdays at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium, Doug’s love for his family shown through in his devotion and selflessness. He will be missed by his wife of 34 years, Elaine, his four children, Amanda (Steve) Farwick, Jason (Katie) Wilson, Brad (Kelly) Price, and Josh Price. Doug was fondly known as “Grandad” to his four grandchildren, Emma Kay Price, Shuler Wilson, Wilson Farwick, and Maggie Wilson, who will cherish the many adventures and laughs they had together. He also leaves behind one aunt, Linda (Jim) Dyson, one sister-in-law Jean Shuman Wilson, one nephew, three nieces, four grandnephews, two grandnieces, and many beloved cousins.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Charles Wilson, sister Sherry Lowery, brother Ken Wilson, and his first wife, Donna Shuler Wilson.

The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm on Friday, March 13, 2026, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Seneca, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life will follow at 4:00 pm.
