Dr. Benjamin Davies Horne passed away unexpectedly on December 28, 2024 from sudden cardiac arrest. A dedicated cardiology researcher, Dr. Horne spent his life championing heart-healthy habits. It is Benjamin’s heart that will be his lasting legacy – a heart that beat for his family and a love and devotion to his Savior Jesus Christ.

Benjamin was born on October 16, 1971 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David Hughes Horne and Barbara Alice Davies. He attended East High School and later studied physics at Brigham Young University. He received a PhD in genetic epidemiology from the University of Utah, where he also obtained master’s degrees in public health and biostatistics.

Benjamin married Carolyn Waisman on August 14, 1993. They later divorced. Together they had four children. He married Erika Stevens on April 5, 2012 in the Bountiful, Utah Temple. Benjamin and Erika had an additional three children together.

Dr. Horne spent the entirety of his career at Intermountain Healthcare. His research focused on population health and precision medicine, including evaluating the genetic epidemiology of heart diseases, developing and implementing clinical decision tools for personalizing medical care, discovering the human health effects of intermittent fasting, and studying the influences of air pollution on major adverse health events. He was a fellow of the American Heart Association, a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Stanford University.

Benjamin had a deep love of fruit trees —especially cherries, apricots, and pluots— and grew hundreds of trees from seed in his backyard. He was fascinated by space and astronomy, turned every project into a science experiment, and was an avid collector of Star Wars Legos and diecast cars. He loved his country and pioneer heritage, and enjoyed participating in the Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of Utah Pioneers. More than anything, Benjamin loved his family and prioritized their well-being and happiness over any personal endeavors.

He was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and served a mission in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Benjamin loved his Savior Jesus Christ, and strived every day to live according to His example.

He is survived by his wife, Erika; children Lauren, Joseph (Elisabeth), Asael, Lucy, Ethan, Wesley, and Alice; mother Barbara; and siblings Lillian Angelovic, Lyman (Jennifer), Sylvia (Rob) Wagner, Heather (Whitney) Leary, and Rosemarie. He was preceded in death by his father David.

Viewings will be held January 9, 6:00-8:00 pm at Russon Mortuary, 1941 N Main St, Farmington; and January 10, 9:30-10:30 am, prior to funeral services at 11 am, at the Quail Flight Ward building, 850 Compton Rd, Farmington.

Services will be streamed live on the Russon Mortuary Live Facebook page and on this obituary page. The live stream will begin 10-15 minutes prior to services and will be posted below.
