Dr. David W. Boyd, 77, of Valdosta, Georgia, passed away on Friday, 14 November. He was born on December 30, 1947 in Greenwood, Mississippi to the late Jesse and Edith Boyd. Dr. Boyd began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s in Mathematics from Bob Jones University in 1970 before achieving a Ph. D in Mathematics at Virginia Tech in 1976 and Master’s in Computer Science at University of South Carolina – Columbia. He went on to teach at Valdosta State University for 30 years (1985 – 2015), and became Professor Emeritus.
As well as academics, Dr. Boyd was a man of faith and was Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Music Leader at the Faith Baptist Church. His interests also led him to become the First Vice President of the South Georgia Classic Car Club, and the President of the Little River Sportsman’s Association.
Dr. Boyd also loved music and sang in a variety of groups including the VSU Concert Choir and Musical Union, the Sine Nomine Singers, the Valdosta Choral Guild, the Harmony Grits barbershop quartet, and All4faith and 4 His Glory of the Faith Baptist Church. He also gave 40 years of service to Blazer Athletics as the scoreboard operator for both basketball and football.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Becky Boyd; his children, Mary Boyd (Dan Autry), David (Jennifer) Boyd, Judy (Wade) Bennett, and Debby (Sam) Newhart; grandchildren, Jesse (Jocelyn) Boyd, Donna Boyd, Abby Boyd, Greg Boyd, Michaela Boyd, Jonathan Carmichael, Joel Carmichael, Leah Bennett, Zack Bennett, Ava Newhart, Kameron Newhart, Lucas Newhart, as well as a thirteenth grandchild on the way; and his sister, Mary Ruth (Dan) Lidster. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers, Jesse Boyd and Paul Boyd.
A memorial service for Dr. Boyd will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at Faith Baptist Church at 11am, followed by burial at McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jesse and Edith Boyd Scholarship Endowment.
