Dr. Ronald D. Burnside, born May 27, 1932, in Vincennes, Indiana, passed away in Bethlehem, Georgia on January 17, 2026 at the age of 93.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty J. Burnside, and their two children, Kimberly Bishop and Timothy (Lisa) Burnside. Ron and Betty have three grandsons, Erik, Phillip and Patrick Meridith, a granddaughter Elizabeth Burnside, and four great grandchildren.

Ron served in the Marine Corp for four years at the rank of 1st Lieutenant where he met his love, Betty.

Ron received his doctorate of History at Indiana University. In 1965, he started at Presbyterian College where he taught history for 34 years as professor and chair of the history department. Ron was named Professor of the year in 1981 and 1994. He received the PC distinguished service award in 1987 and 1994. He enjoyed helping young adults to understand how the past influences the present and the future. During that time he also taught dance to students such as the foxtrot and the swing and loved to play in the ping-pong campus tournament, upsetting many unexpected students.

Both Ron and Betty sang in the choir at Broad Street United Methodist Church of Clinton, SC and Laurens County Chorale.

After Ron’s retirement, they moved to Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens, S.C.

Ron was deeply involved and an advocate for mental health. He served on the Laurens Mental Health Board. He was the lead on the first independent housing for people with mental health needs. It was named Burnside Manor after his critical involvement.

Ron had a love for music which was demonstrated by his continuous whistling which he was happy to teach others. He has also learned how to play the Harmonica, Cello, dulcimers and other string instruments and was part of the band Yesterukes.

Ron and Betty’s desire for travel led to many international adventures. He stayed in China for four months teaching American history at Beijing University, while learning about Chinese culture.

Ron was known for his ability to listen to others and his sense of humor and wisdom. Ron’s kindness and passion for helping others have touched many lives for the better.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at 2:00 PM at the Martha Franks Rasor Chapel.
