Dr. William Robert Owens, Sr., peacefully departed this life at the age of 68 on November 20, 2023. He was a son of the late Dr. P.W. Owens and Virginia F. Owens. Bill was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cheraw, SC. He cherished the time he spent with his family and friends, he loved to go fishing, watching Sunday afternoon NASCAR races, and was an avid sports fan. Bill was a friend to all that knew him.
Dr. Bill was a graduate of Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic and a member of the South Carolina Chiropractic Association. In 1986, Dr. Bill moved back to Cheraw to work along with his father, Dr. P.W. Owens at Owens Chiropractic. Dr. Bill was a graduate of USC Institute of Government and served 12.5 years on Chesterfield County Council, with 6 years served as Chairman of Chesterfield County Council.
He served on the board of Directors for Pee Dee Council of Governments, served as past Chairman of Eastern Alliance, served on the board of Directors of Northeastern Strategic Alliance (NESA), served on the Board of Directors of Charlotte Regional Partnership, was past Chairman of the Greater Cheraw Chamber of Commerce, past President of Cheraw Kiwanis Club, a founder and past President of the Cheravian Club, charter member of Cheraw Moose Lodge, served on the Emergency Service Committee of Chesterfield County, co-chaired Cheraw Palmetto Regatta, and was named South Carolina Ambassador for Economic Development in 2003 by Governor Mark Sanford.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 45 years, Suzanne Lomas Owens, and their 2 sons, William Robert Owens, II, of Greenville, SC and Jonathan Ryan Owens, of Cheraw, SC.
Along with his parents listed above, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Roger Alan Owens.
A Celebration of Life will be announced, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
