Duane Bierman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brosh Chapel - Cedar Rapids from Jul. 20 to Jul. 30, 2025.
Duane Bierman, 76, of Fairfax, Iowa, passed away peacefully on July 19, 2025. A man of quiet strength, steady kindness, and deep devotion to his family and community, Duane's presence will be deeply missed by all who had the gift of knowing him. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.

Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Duane was a lifelong Iowan at heart, though his journey took him far and wide. Over the years, he had the opportunity to visit all 50 States, reflecting a quiet sense of curiosity and appreciation for the places and people that make up the country he loved. From 1999 to 2012, Duane made his home in Alaska, where he worked in a number of roles within the Matanuska-Susitna School District. He brought to each position the same qualities that defined his life: dedication, humility, and care for others. After retiring, he returned to Iowa and rejoined his beloved Fairfax community, reconnecting with many lifelong friends. He was a faithful member of St. John XXIII Parish and proudly served with the Fairfax American Legion Pekomy Post 572, continuing his quiet commitment to service and fellowship.

Duane had a deep love for woodworking, a craft he practiced with care, patience, and pride. He especially enjoyed working in the Amana tradition, known for its timeless design and solid craftsmanship. He got his start in woodworking with his brother, and over the years, he created furniture, clocks, and other well-made treasures. Each piece was built not just to last, but to be loved, and they remain in the homes of family and friends as lasting reminders of his quiet creativity and generous spirit. He loved playing euchre and other card games, enjoying the camaraderie and connection those games brought. Whether around the table with friends or family, Duane valued time spent together, and his presence brought a steady warmth to every gathering.

One of the greatest blessings in Duane's life was his marriage to Sue, whom he met at Sauerkraut Days. The two were married in 1990, beginning a partnership rooted in love, friendship, and shared values. Together they raised their son, Paul, of whom Duane was immensely proud.

Duane is survived by his beloved wife, Sue, and his son, Paul (Peera Songkunnatham); brother-in-law Bob (June) Raley; sisters-in-law and Jan (Rich) Carlson and Colleen (Wayne) Reinhardt; as well as his nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his dear friend, Dixie Carothers, whose friendship brought warmth and companionship through many seasons of life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Laurine Bierman, and his brother, Paul Bierman.

His life was one of quiet service, steadfast love, and hands that built and healed in equal measure.
