He was my first ever JROTC instructor and I have nothing but good memories about him. He always encouraged cadets and believed in us. Only got to have him for 1 semester before he moved but he made that semester one of the best I´ve ever had. He was Always preaching his "Co2" consideration of others, and that shows you the type of man he was. Rest in peace Sergeant Sterling you will be forever remembered

Sgt. Duane Sterling, colleague and friend at South Cobb High School. Really cared about all of his students in the JROTC program and was a great mentor to many, many youth through his years at the school. He was an integral part of the program with Col. From kindergarten at Boynton, to FairpIain Jr. High, to Benton Harbor High School, and beyond...I never heard a disparaging word about Duane.

Any encounter with Duane was a guaranteed good laugh. His easy-going demeanor had a way of putting you at ease. What a beautiful human being. And in his passing, may his beautiful spirit continue to uplift through so many loving memories.  And may his legacy of accomplishments and contributions in life never be forgotten. You made an indelible impression and will be truly missed.

Sending lots of comforting, healing, loving, and peace-filled prayers at this difficult time to his family, friends and anyone who had the pleasure to meet you, Duane.

Sgt Sterling was my AJRTOC instructor at South Cobb. His laugh was infectious. He always had a word of encouragement and a smile on His face. I will always treasure the week I had him as my instructor down in Ft. Benning GA for JCLC. I was the only one in Charlie Company from my highschool but knowing Sgt Sterling was one of my instructors was a relief.

He was my first instructor in JROTC and one of the many reasons why I am going the route of commissioning into the army after college. He was always one to ensure his students were cared for and knew that someone was behind them and supporting them. My heart goes out to his family and anyone who knew him.

When I read in your newspaper in the class that you were from small town Benton Harbor Michigan , I knew my freshman year that you knew my family in some way . It turned out my older cousin was your buddy . You were like a father figure to me and made a better man and played a significant roll . Outside of school you were a wonderful person and had class . You´ll be missed

My favorite memory was stopping by the JROTC building to catch up with my former instructors and one day I was introduced to Sgt. Sterling as he was added to the program after I graduated. Throughout the years I would stop by and this particular time I came with my then husband and like a father he drilled him like sgt. Reed and Col. Bradley did, out of love. I will remember that smile and laugh. The kind words and encouragement he's given over the years. My condolences to Mrs. Sterling and his family, friends and all those affected by his loss. "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. " There is no doubt that he is resting with the father. May the peace of God comfort us all that surpasses ALL understanding.

I extend my condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of my great friend, Duane Sterling. A man of great character and integrity. We will miss him dearly. God is covering us ...

Memories:
Playing on elementary school swings, running through the hallways in jr high; riding the bus to high school & sharing honey buns at lunchtime.
Poetry, Music and Movies. Our own secret codes, the jokes that we told; nothing on earth nor beyond can ever break the bond that we hold.

The c/o of 1981 loves you so much and you will always be one of a kind!

Thank you for serving our country and for teaching our youth as you led by example.

Salute!
