DWAYNE'S JOURNEY
Aviation Maintenance Technician 1 (AMT), Dwayne Lafayette Cuffee was born on February 17, 1957 in Hebron, Maryland to the late Raymond Alfred Cuffee, Sr. and Barbara Smith. Dwayne departed this life at the age of sixty-eight (68) on Saturday, April 19, 2025.
Dwayne started off his military career in the United States Air Force and retired from the United States Coast Guard on September 1, 2001 after serving 22 years and 9 months. He also worked for Inter- County Public Transportation Authority in Elizabeth City for 7 years.
Dwayne loved collecting, showcasing, and selling African-American slave artifacts and civil war memorabilia. His passion for educating others about our history and heritage brought such joy. Dwayne would light up when he talked about each artifact as though each piece was personal. His business, called African-American Memorabilia (AAM), traveled throughout North Carolina showcasing slavery artifacts and the civil war movement, bringing the realness of our past forward.
Dwayne is survived by: his wife of forty-four (44) years, Marietta Cuffee; daughter, Ta-Von Cuffee Becker and son, Troy M. Cuffee (Stephanie); seven grandchildren, Keanna Perry, Ryanne Morris, Azariah Cuffee, Davian Cuffee, DaVon Cuffee, Davante Cuffee and Aniyah Cuffee; three great grandchildren, Arianna Somerville and twins, Amiyah and Amari Somerville; his brother, Edwin Cuffee; sisters Julia Giddens (Ronald), Joanne Short, Cherrie Jiles, BarbaraAnn Williams, Laverne Taylor, Alfreda Rodriquez (Aristides) and Cleo Hayes and a host of relatives, cousins, and friends.
