Earl Eugene "Sonny" Royce

Cumberland, MD-Earl "Sonny" Eugene Royce, 88, of Cumberland, MD, died Saturday, December 7, 2024,
surrounded by his family.
Born July 28, 1936, Sonny lived a full life, always looking out for his friends and lending a helping hand wherever he could. Though he loved traveling all over the world, he always said there was no place like his home in the mountains of Western Maryland.
After graduating from Allegany High School in 1954, Earl joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for 3 years in various places, including Hawaii and Japan. He returned home as a Sergeant and began working at the Cumberland Fire Department. He retired as Deputy Chief after 40 years of service and could tell you all sorts of stories about the fires he fought and the friendships he forged.
The most important things in Earl's life were his family and friends. He married the love of his life, Mona JoAnn, and together, they created a beautiful life over the next 62 years.
Earl is survived by his son: Kevin and Mary Royce; his daughter: Cheryl "Sue" and Michael Palmer; his grandchildren: Michael, Nathan (wife Nadia); Jessica, Lauren (husband Gerhard); and Trevor (wife Ally); and his 4 great grandchildren, Rae, Cooper, Jason, and Margot.
The family invites you to celebrate and honor Sonny's life––go out of your way to help a friend in need, take a Sunday drive around the countryside, pour yourself "2 fingers" of your favorite drink and enjoy the company of those you love.
A memorial service will be conducted at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 930 Frederick Street, Cumberland, MD, on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 11 A.M. with Pastor David Hattenfield officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans' Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military Honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
The family welcomes you to join them at the Royce home from 2-5 PM to remember and celebrate Sonny's life.
