Edgar Holmes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Dahlborg-MacNevin Funeral Home on Aug. 16, 2024.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edgar Leonard Holmes Jr, 74. Eddy split his time between Stuart, FL, and Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard. Eddy was the loving husband of his late wife Lou-Ann Kuna and was the son of the late Edgar L. Holmes and Shirley (Holmgren) Holmes. Eddy is survived by his siblings William Holmes and wife Tara Holmes of Kettle Falls, WA, Barbara Briggs and husband David Briggs of Lakeville, MA, and Scott Holmes and wife Danielle Holmes of Lakeville, MA, and his beloved Australian Shepherd, Bodhi. Ed is also survived by his nieces and nephews, who he loved like his own children: Jacob Correia and wife Marguerite, Jonathan Holmes, Daniel Holmes, Chris Holmes, Katie Catarius-Holmes and wife Madison Catarius-Holmes, and Corey Holmes.
Eddy was born in Middleboro, MA on December 27th, 1949. He grew up in Lakeville, MA, and graduated from Apponequet High School in 1967. Eddy attended Southern Massachusetts University and graduated after he served in the Peace Corps for two years in Brazil. Eddy also attended the Chapman's School of Seamanship in Stuart, FL where he became Captain Ed in May of 1989. From 1989 to 2016, Eddy captained multiple ships taking him all over the world, including New England, Florida, the Caribbean, France, Spain, Tunisia, Italy, and Portugal. Captain Ed also has completed seven trans-Atlantic Crossings and four passages through the Panama Canal. At the time of his passing, Eddy was working for the Harborside Inn in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard as the Dock Master.
Eddy, an accomplished captain, loved his New England sports teams and attending the Red Sox, Patriots, and Bruins with his family. Eddy also loved his dogs and taking them for walks around his home in Stuart and Edgartown. Eddy made friends that turned into family everywhere he went and left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
We welcome all who knew Eddy to join us in celebrating his life under the tent at Heritage Hill in Lakeville, MA on Sunday, August 18th from 12-3. We will also have the opportunity to celebrate his life in late September in Martha's Vineyard and again in Florida in December to celebrate his truly adventurous life and all the friends he met along the way. More details will come regarding those events.

I met Captain Ed when I bought a boat and he was my delivery Captain. When we got to Florida I ended up spending a month in the spare room in Stuart as we outfitted the boat and a tremendous storm shut everything down. He and Lu-Ann treated me like family and we became very close friends. When I was married in the Keys he and Lu came down to Marathon to join us. My wife became close to them both as well. We too have shared our love of dogs. Bodhi is a special boy that I got to know after visiting Ed in Stuart three years ago. I was stunned when I didn´t receive a return call a few weeks ago and feared that Ed had crossed the rainbow bridge where I know all of his pets and Lu-Ann are waiting for him. Rest In Peace my friend.

Ed was dear to my family. He was married to my sister LouAnn (together over 30 years), brother-in-law to me, and a favorite uncle to my children, especially John and Hailey.
When Lou passed away in 2017, Ed and I fell into a pattern of frequent phone calls and texts. In 2018 Hailey and Jesse adopted Charlie into their family, Ed made sure to meet him. When John's son Benny was diagnosed with cancer in January of '21, Ed was included in the family text group that kept us all up to date with Benny's hospitalization, diagnosis and start up of chemotherapy. Ed ordered wristbands that some of the family is still wearing in support of BEnny's fight.
He will be missed by all.

My first memory of Ed was meeting him at the Key West Airport at night in the early 1980s. He had flown in with another friend. My late husband and I became great friends of his and his wife LouAnn. LouAnn was actually my best friend until her death in 2017.
He and LouAnn moved to Ramrod Key shortly after that meeting at the airport and we spent many days sailing the waters around the Keys and snorkeling at the reef. We remained friends after they moved to Stuart -I escaped many storms taking shelter in their home.

I was shocked to hear of his passing as I had remained in contact with him through out the years. He had not responded to my last text. Now I know why. He did have the best stories . The silver lining to this is that he had lived his life to the fullest and had experienced so many different cultures and ways of life; he did not die thinking he had not lived!
RIP Ed. You will be missed by many. I am profoundly sad. Love and peace to all Linda Swift

Captain Ed and I worked together for a couple of years in the Bahamas, Florida, and all up the East Coast to Maine. We had some fun and adventurous times, becoming good friends along the way. I will miss him. Sending warm thoughts to his family and all who knew him. Kelsey
