Edith Grace Scouten, age 50, died with confidence in the resurrection, on Friday, November 7, 2025, while in hospice care with CareFirst NY, and cared for by her beloved parents, James and Delight Scouten. It was a blessing for her parents to be with her during her final days.
Edith graduated from Towson High School, Towson, MD in 1993. During high school Edith was both an outstanding musician and athlete. Upon graduation she was named Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts. She was also named as the first string All Baltimore County lacrosse goalie three years in a row.
Following High School, she attended Bridgewater College in Virginia where she graduated with a BA in music. Her principal instrument was tenor trombone, but she always loved learning a new instrument. She played women's lacrosse and was named the All ODAC second string lacrosse goalie three years in a row. The last time her parents checked, she still held a Bridgewater College "saves" record.
Upon graduation from college, she taught elementary school band and orchestra in Anne Arundel County, MD. She also earned a graduate certificate in music from Towson State University.
Later she taught middle school band in Fauquier County, VA, where she learned to master and teach a variety of band instruments. Afterward, Edith taught elementary school general music in Essex County, VA.
Moving to Corning to be near her parents, Edith worked with elementary school students at All Saints Academy. Meanwhile, she earned a master's degree in Literacy from Elmira College, played trombone with The Corning Area Community Concert Band, and sang in the choir at Christ Episcopal Church.
Recently Edith has been the organist/choir director at Church of the Redeemer in Addison, NY. Edith just loved playing the church organ and working with the choir! She truly loved her church congregation.
She is survived by her parents, Jim and Delight; brother, George, and his family; uncle, Bill Scouten; great-aunts, Theola Shukwit and Naomi Lawrence; and numerous cousins. Edith was predeceased by four grandparents; her aunts, Nancy Scouten and Gretchen (Tom) Davis; and by her cousin, David Scouten.
Some of the attributes we all love about Edith are: determination, wit, focus, generosity, concern for others, selflessness, loyalty, peacefulness and joy.
A Memorial Service for Ms. Scouten will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at 1:00 PM, at Church of the Redeemer, 1 Wombaugh Square, Addison, NY. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
A reception will immediately follow the service at Fran's Landing, 996 Addison Rd., Painted Post, NY.
Edith loved flowers. The day before she died, she had her mother buy flowers in fall colors. She gave some of these flowers to several friends and kept some for herself. Flowers are welcomed.
