Edna "Joyce" Thurston, 92, of Vega, TX died Friday, March 29, 2024.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 8, 2024, at First Baptist Church in Vega, TX with pastor Brian Hevrin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers.
Joyce was born February 17, 1932, to Leroy and Edna Horrell in Amarillo, TX but was raised in Vega, TX. She remained in Vega until 2014, when she moved to Nebraska to be near her son. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and various musical groups inside and outside of the church.
Back in the days (1950's) when you still dialed "0" to call the operator, you often reached Joyce as that operator. She also worked as a waitress, taking great pride in her work, retiring as a caretaker for the young and old.
Joyce loved people and was often playing games with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Berneice, Boydston; seven brothers, Clyde Horrell, Wilbur Horrell, Cecil Horrell, Gherald Horrell, Roy Horrell, Oscar Horrell, and Larry Horrell; a grandson, Zack Thurston.
Survivors include a son, Bobby J. Thurston, of Freemont, NE; grandchildren, Beau Thurston, of Kenowa, OK, Miranda Allen, of Scottsdale, AZ, Travis Thurston, of Houston, TX, and Tyler Thurston, of Houston, TX; great-grandchildren, Kaiya and Rigby Allen, Tinsley, Tate, Tess and Taylor Thurston; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins who loved her dearly.
Joyce's family wishes to recognize Christy Vanek, who was a treasured friend to Joyce. She was always there to help Joyce, was at her bedside praying with her, and holding Joyce's hand as she took her last breath.
The family suggests memorials to Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega, PO Box 496, Vega, TX 79092.
