Edward A. Bush, age 95 of Painted Post, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 at his home.
Born on April 13, 1930, to the late Edward L. and Allene (Milliron) Bush, Ed was raised in Vandergrift, PA. A dedicated scholar, Ed attended the Kiski School to prepare for college and then earned his bachelor and doctoral degrees in Ceramic Technology from Penn State University.
On February 20, 1965, Ed married Louise Kugler, with whom he shared a devoted and adventurous life. They welcomed three children.
Following the completion of his doctorate, Ed began a distinguished career in research and development with Corning Inc. at Sullivan Park. He played a vital role in the advancement of Corning's ceramic products and technologies, retiring in 1995. Conversations at the family dinner table often revolved around ceramic stovetops, surgical knives, the balls in ballpoint pens, honeycomb ceramics for catalytic converters, and other research projects he contributed to during his 37-year career with Corning.
As a Presbyterian and member of the United Church of Painted Post, he served faithfully as Elder, Deacon, and church historian.
Ed was an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. He flew airplanes, climbed the Matterhorn, and explored the Canadian Arctic on backpacking trips to Baffin Island. The Adirondack Mountains, the California Sierras, and 'The Gunks' feature prominently in vacation photos with family and friends. Locally, he delighted the community with ragtime piano performances at area events. Ed was known for his eclectic and passionate interests in Carder Steuben glass, Native American pottery, timber rattlesnakes, and Chinese postage stamps. He authored a scholarly article on the issue of Frederick Carder's middle name. (Spoiler: he didn't have one.)
Ed is remembered for his skill at regaling people with stories from his many adventures. His intellectual curiosity, understated humor, and steadfast dedication to his church and family will also be missed.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Louise Kugler Bush of Painted Post, NY; children: Daniel Austin (Sunhwa) Bush of Painted Post, NY, Sarah Louise Bush (Johannes Schul) of Columbia, MO and Martha Cory Bush (Sergei Hasegawa) of Brooklyn, NY; sister, Elaine Bush Cochran of Baltimore, MD; granddaughters: Louise and Rowan Schul, Ravi Hasegawa, Hannah Bush; foster granddaughter Johanna Schramm; and nephews: John Girard Cochran of Baltimore, MD and Ross Allen Cochran of Wayne, PA.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at the United Church of Painted Post, 201 N. Hamilton St., Painted Post, NY on Saturday, September 20, 2025 at 11:00 am, Pastor David Preisendanz officiating. A private burial will take place in Fairview Cemetery, Painted Post. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with Ed's care.
