Edward Glen Chisolm, 79, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, November 9, 2024, after a year's long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Glen was born on the morning of February 28, 1945, to Henry Roy Chisolm and Minnie Lee Perry Chisolm in Coxburg, MS located on the Holmes/Yazoo County line.
His greatest joy in life was working with children. He was the ultimate "baby person". He pursued a career in elementary education earning degrees from Holmes Jr College, Delta State University, The University of Mississippi, and Mississippi State University. His career spanned over three decades holding many positions including principal, assistant principal, classroom teacher, and supervisor of buses, buildings, and grounds. Additionally, he spent 15 years coaching softball both with city league sports and as the 1st slow-pitch softball coach for Houston High School. He led the Hilltoppers to a 4A district championship in 1994. Outside of the educational system, he spent countless hours of his life mentoring youth who affectionately nicknamed him "Mr. Cheeseball".
Glen also worked many nights and summers at Davis Lake with the National Park Service. Over the years he volunteered with many community groups including the Fair Association, Chickasaw County Soil and Water Conservation District, Master Gardeners, and Houlka/Houston Water Association as well as served on the boards of his local church. He taught the men's adult bible school class at First United Methodist Church in Houston, MS.
In 1971, Glen married fellow educator Cara Verell Chisolm. Ever the educators, the wedding was strategically planned around spring break and the honeymoon was a Mississippi Association of Educators meeting in Jackson, MS.
Throughout his life, Glen was a loyal son and brother, grandfather and pop, trusted friend, devoted husband and father, dedicated caregiver, and pillar of the community. He will be missed dearly.
A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 1:00 PM at Houston Funeral Home with Bro. Harold Robinson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 PM and 1 hour before service the day of the funeral at Houston Funeral Home. Burial will follow for family and close friends.
Glen is survived by his wife of 53 years Cara Verell Chisolm. One stepdaughter Ramona Thomas of Houston, MS. One stepson Dan Robert Thomas of San Diego, CA. One daughter Keri Glen Chisolm of Houston, MS. One grand-daughter Katylynn Thomas Joyner (Emily) of Collierville. and two great-grandchildren Emmitt Verell Wright and Kaliope Baye Wright. Four sisters, Royal Nette Chisolm of Bentonia, MS, Clara Ellzey (David) of Bentonia, MS, Catherine Williamson (Paul) of Asheboro, NC, Teina Melton (Jerry) of Bentonia, MS, and a host of nieces and nephews.
