On March 14, 2022, Edward B. (Ed) Dougherty, age 65, passed away peacefully from cancer at Season's Hospice in Wilmington. Ed was born on March 7, 1957, in Wilmington, Delaware, to Eugene and Kathleen Dougherty, both of whom are deceased.
Ed attended Christ Our King parochial school and graduated from Salesianum High School. He graduated from St. Joseph's University (PA), with honors, with a B.A. Degree in International Relations. He lived his entire life in Wilmington. Ed was a talented technical writer, having worked to produce hundreds of technical manuals for companies like All-Fill (Exton, PA) and Autotote (Newark, DE). One of Ed's hobbies was to design, fabricate and paint miniature figures, such as famous military figures and ornate chess pieces.
Ed's real love was horseracing and horses. Over the years, Ed spent many weekends at Delaware Park and was known to be an excellent handicapper. Many of his friends at Delaware Park will miss him.
Ed was an avid reader, audiophile, gourmand, and movie buff. His reading and cinematic tastes were unusual and eclectic. His favorite book was Gravity's Rainbow, by Thomas Pynchon, a book that only Ed and very few others could fully appreciate. But Ed always was willing to share his opinions of restaurants in the Wilmington area and his favorite albums and movies. Pulp Fiction and horseracing movies like Secretariat and Dreamer were particular favorites.
While Ed had trouble hearing in the last years of his life, he was a good story-teller and always displayed his unique sense of humor. He could be inappropriate, cutting, sardonic and often misunderstood, but (almost) always funny.
Ed never married or had any children. He will be dearly missed by his brother Gene and sister-in law Kathy (Schlosberg) Dougherty from Newark; and his brother Gerry, now from Bozeman, Montana; and their children and families. He will also be missed by his dear friend Georgia Eastburn.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2022 from 3-4:30pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, in Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, Ed's family would appreciate donations to the Sunday Breakfast Mission (Wilmington, DE).
Ed's family would like to thank Season's Hospice (Wilmington Hospital) for their care and support over the last days of his life.
