Edward Marshall Fine of Eugene died tragically in a motorcycle accident on the afternoon of October 2, 2025. He was 58 years old.
Edward is survived by his wife of 29 years, Elizabeth; his daughter, Irene; his mother, Vicky; and his brother, Bill. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. I. Howard Fine and his sister, Laura Fine-Morrison.
Born in Boston, MA on June 8, 1967, Edward was by turns a sweet, bright and mischievous child. He graduated from Marist High School and the University of Oregon. For decades, he worked at the Oregon Eye Institute as an ophthalmic technician and surgical assistant along side his father and other doctors. His skill and compassion were deeply valued by colleagues and patients alike.
Edward's entrepreneurial spirit led him down many paths: from an early stint as a repo man to running a coffee shop, and later founding a Turo car-rental business that grew to encompass a fleet of ten cars. His love of cars was legendary, with a particular fondness for Tesla's and other high-performance vehicles, and he delighted in sharing that enthusiasm with others. He taught over a hundred young people to drive, always insisting that they learn on a stick shift.
A citizen of the world, Edward had a love of travel that began with study-abroad programs in France, Ecuador and Mexico. He met his wife while both were studying in Seville, Spain. He made life-long friends wherever he went.
His love for family was unwavering, and he found his greatest joy in being a husband and father. He shared an uncommonly deep bond with his daughter Irene, whom he described as his "best work yet." He was happiest when his loved ones were well-fed, safe from harm and parked in front of an off-beat movie. Edward was the kind of person who could fix anything - a car, a gadget, a problem - and he was always available, day or night, to help anyone who needed him. His big heart, generosity, and zest for life touched everyone who knew him. His trademark bear hugs, smile, irreverent sense of humor and excellent hats will be deeply missed by his loved ones and many friends.
A gathering to celebrate Edward's life will be held at Venue 252 from 2 to 5 pm on November 9,2025.
Contributions in his name can be made to the Oregon Community Foundation for further credit to the Dr. I. Howard and Victoria Fine Scholarship Fund, Luvable Dog Rescue of Eugene or a charity of your choice.

I knew Edward when I was in grade school - he was known as "Eddie" back then and was a wonderful friend, always up for adventure and laughs. I lost touch with him and then, when I was in high school and being menaced by some bullies in a parking lot of 7-11 late one night - he happened to show up and save me from what looked to be a violent attack. He was my hero that day, a deus ex machina with a big, warm smile. Rest in peace, my friend.

Always a pleasure to take care of the Fines at Adam's Place, and later on, at Rye. Eddie's eyes when he laughed always got me to crack me a smile. Howard and he are some of my favorites regulars and they are missed sorely. So sorry for your loss. He was far too young.

Ed was always smiling when I saw him either in NY, Eugene or Santa Barbara. He was truly a man of the world with the many languages he knew. At the US Open tennis center, he just stared a conversation with an international couple sitting near us! Amazing. And he really knew how to fix and do things. Who knew you could camp comfortably in a Tesla? And excellent high performance driving on the mountainous roads on the way to the Oregon coast. I'm sure he's helping others, starting conversations and smiling with everyone he meets in heaven. Ed, you'll be missed by all but especially by your family, daughter and wife, Liz. Love always. Jim
