Edward L. Fonk was born on September 9, 1932, in Bozeman, Montana, to Hubert and Erlice (Skinner) Fonk. He was raised in Manhattan, Montana, where he graduated from Manhattan High School in 1952. Shortly after, Ed answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army and proudly becoming a paratrooper with the legendary 82nd Airborne Division.
While stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Ed married his high school sweetheart, Billie Lee Bates, on August 19, 1954. Together, they built a life rooted in love and resilience, raising four beloved children: Terry, Larry, Kathy, and Barry.
Ed began his career as a lineman with Mountain Bell, where he worked with dedication and grit until his retirement. In April 1973, Ed faced the heartbreaking loss of Billie Lee. As a single father of four, he met the challenge with quiet strength and unwavering devotion. Through those years, family remained his anchor. His legendary gravy recipe became a symbol of comfort and tradition, still cherished by bricklayers and kin alike.
