Edward Glaser (1949-2024) was a creative, free-spirited, caring individual who delighted in expressing his unique vision of the world through writing, art, photography, and countless conversations with friends and loved ones. He was born in Fürth, a city in northern Bavaria, Germany, to Ruth Glaser and Oda Sloan, along with his twin brother, Odas. When Edward was nine years old, he moved with his mother, stepfather Paul Toots, and brother to Los Angeles, California. In Los Angeles, Edward and Odas welcomed their younger brother, Charles.
Edward graduated from John Marshall High School in 1967, where he participated in Concert Choir and German Club. He also attended Los Angeles City College, where he met his wife, Marea Avon (Hilliard) Glaser. Edward and Avon married in 1976. Their union brought the birth of their daughter, Christina. Edward was also an adopted father to Michael, Avon's firstborn child.
For nineteen years, Edward worked at Cedars Sinai Hospital, in Los Angeles, as part of the emergency room admissions staff. He was singularly focused on providing patients and their loved ones with comfort during their times of pain, fear, and grief. His warmth and empathy provided comfort to many. Edward also met several celebrities during his time at Cedars. He enjoyed sharing humorous and colorful stories about his conversations and encounters with the famous.
After his time at Cedars, Edward volunteered for several years for PATH, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing services to the Los Angeles homeless population. Edward had experienced homelessness himself, and he felt a great kinship with those struggling with the challenges of homelessness and housing insecurity. In addition, Edward offered his services as a volunteer Santa Claus for several organizations. He took great joy in bringing happiness to children, even letting them tug on his all-natural white beard.
Edward was a great science fiction enthusiast. For many years, he was an active member of the Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society ("LASFS"), where he had many friends.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, and his former wife, Avon. He is survived by his brother Odas and wife Darlene, his brother Charles and wife Andrea, his children Michael and Christina, his son-in-law Brian, grandsons Charles and Julian, and a host of extended family and friends.
A memorial for Edward will be announced in the coming weeks. His final resting place will be located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
