Edward Harry Pies (Mr. Pies), 83, passed away Friday, September 19, 2025, at Atrium Health in Shelby, NC.
A native of Cincinnati, OH, Mr. Pies was born on February 2, 1942, son of the late Norvin John Pies and Helen Decker Pies. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Patricia Alice Long Pies, one daughter, Jan Allison Pies, one stepson, Stephen Allen Merz, and one granddaughter, Rachel Elizabeth Thomas.
He is survived by four children, namely David Edward Pies of Burlison, TN, Laura Theresa Pies-Thomas (John) of Fort Myers, FL, Sherry Marie Grinstead of Fairfield, OH, and Wendy Jean Schalk of Villa Hills, KY, one stepdaughter, Lisa Ann Smith (Dennis) of Forest City, NC, eleven grandchildren, four great grandchildren, one great great grandson, two sisters, Mary Sue Pies Elam (Everett) of Adrian, MI, and Cathy Lucille Pies of Sarasota, FL, and a lifelong friend, Mr. David Stehlin of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mr. Pies spent over 60 years in the food service industry. Mr. Pies owned the Hitching Post restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio, before moving to North Carolina in 1981. Mr. Pies spent more than 22 years as a general manager at Jackson’s Cafeteria in Forest City, Shelby, and Gastonia. Mr. Pies spent 8 years on the fire and rescue squad in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Pies spent many years caring for his wife before her death in 2023. Mr. Pies enjoyed gardening, working with tools, fishing, 8 track tapes, and 1960s music.
Mr. Pies began dialysis treatment at DCI North in Shelby, NC in February 2023. He considered the people that went through this treatment as his second family. Mr. Pies was especially thankful for the caring treatment he received from Mrs. Jessie McSwain at Senior TLC in Shelby, NC.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Cleveland Funeral Services and Crematory from 5:00pm – 7:30pm.
