Edward J. Hellner, age 90, of Wisconsin Rapids, WI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at Arborwood Assisted Living in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00pm on Friday, February 21, 2025, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:30am until the time of service. Burial will be held at St. Martins Catholic Cemetery in Bancroft, WI.
Edward was born on February 1, 1935, in East Pittsburgh, PA to Charles and Mary (Buttyan) Hellner. He attended grade school in Pennsylvania and then the family came to Wisconsin Rapids in 1948, and he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1952. Edward attended Tulsa University in Oklahoma then he joined the National Guard in 1953, serving for 22 years. Edward met Marcia in 1954 and they were married on Oct 6, 1956, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids.
In Edward's early years, he worked at Standard Oil Gas Station and Consolidated Papers. In 1961, the National Guard was called out to Fort Lewis, WA during the Berlin Crisis and there he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. After returning to Wisconsin Rapids, he joined the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department in December 1962. He was a police officer for 14 years.
In 1976, Edward was elected to the office of Wood County Circuit Court. He served as Wood County Clerk of Court for 22 years. He retired in January 1999.
Edward enjoyed retirement; he loved to travel by car. He spent winters with Marcia in Florida and Arizona. He was active with Parish Council, choir, and he ushered masses at St. Vincent de Paul for many years. He served on the Grand Rapids town board for 5 years.
Edward enjoyed playing cards with friends at the Senior Center and at the courthouse. He was also a senior volunteer transport driver to help people to and from medical appointments. He always looked forward to attending his grandchildren's sporting and academic events. In his younger years, Edward enjoyed cutting wood with his sons. He will be dearly missed by family and many friends.
Edward is survived by his wife, Marcia Hellner; children, Charles (Althea), Tim, Peter (Carolyn), Greg, Maria Siegler, Michael, and Steven (Christine); grandchildren, Jackie (Steve) Dye, Jill (Lars) Thomas, Patrick Hellner, Clinton (Felicia) Hellner, David (Ashley) Siegler, Paul Siegler, and Matthew Siegler; great-grandchildren, Curtis, Haley, Bethany, Abby, Max, and one on the way; great-great grandchild, Aspen; siblings, Margaret Lee and Robert Hellner; sisters and brothers-in-law, Marge Sorenson, Elaine (Jack) Skibba, Lynda Zager and Bob Knoll; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John Hellner, William Hellner, Andrew Hellner, Viola Potoma, Evelyn McClesky, and Betty Griffin; and sister- in-law, Kathy Knoll.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Edward's name to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church or Assumption High School Athletics.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Dickman, Arborwood Lodge Assisted Living, and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care and guidance.
