Edward G. Layton
Utica
Edward G. Layton, the "Bear", 80, of Utica, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2025 at St. Luke's Home.
He was born on February 14, 1945 in Atlanta, GA, a son of the late DeForest and Mary (Demers) Layton. He graduated from Whitesboro Central Schools. Edward proudly served his country in the US Navy from 1964 – 1968, based in Newport Rhode Island. He sailed aboard the USS Cadmus (AR-14) during the Vietnam Conflict in Malta on the Mediterranean Sea. He was also in the Reserves for two years following active duty. On June 6, 1970, Edward was united in marriage to Marcia L. Pope in North Norwich and shared a blessed union of 55 years. Edward was employed with Harron Cable and then Adelphia Communications Corp in Utica as a cable technician until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the Whitestown American Legion Post #1113 where he served as a Vice Commander and a Judge Advocate. Edward was also a member of the United States Power Squadron and he took courses in Meteorology, Seamonship Piloting and Advanced Piloting.
Ed had a deep love for the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and boating. He was an avid hunter who looked forward to spending every season at his hunting camp, where he shared countless days with family and close friends. This love of the outdoors was a passion he proudly passed on to his sons. Above all, Ed found his greatest joy on the water. Summers were spent on the St. Lawrence River where he and his family made life-long memories and dear friends. Boating, fishing, and simply being together on the water was what he loved. Having grown up boating on the river with his parents, Ed made sure his wife and sons could experience that same sense of freedom and joy. He often joked about having a bit of "three-foot fever" when it came to boats, always dreaming about the next one - but his most beloved was the Seanasea, affectionately named after his son, Sean. Edward and his wife spent his later years RVing and boating at the Fish Creek Marina.
Surviving are his wife, Marcia; son, Brian (Jacklyn) Layton; grandchildren, Reeghan and Ryan Layton; brother, Thomas (Fiancee, Patti) Layton; sister-in-law, Helen Layton and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his infant daughter, Jamie Sue Layton; son, Sean DeForest Layton; brother, Robert Layton; sister, Patty (Nick) Rabice and sister-in-law, Patty Layton.
Edward's family wishes to extend their gratitude to the nurses and staff with Wynn Hospital and St. Luke's Home for all their wonderful care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited to visitation on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 4-6 pm at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 40 Main St., Whitesboro. Funeral services will commence at the conclusion of visitation. Interment will be in Sherburne West Hill Cemetery.
Remembrances in Edward's name may be made to the Whitestown American Legion Post #1113, 110 Main St., Whitesboro, NY 13492.

What can be said, you were like an uncle to us all. You always taught me to respect the outdoors as well as the game that we hunted or fished. I Know that Sean was there waiting to welcome you. Love you Bear!
