He is survived by his children, Ann Marie (Scott) Firmstone & Edward Matarazzo; grandchildren, Haleigh Firmstone, Ryan Firmstone, & Maddi Firmstone; sister, JoAnn Koepke; niece, nephews, cousins, & dear friends.
Ed's funeral service will be celebrated, Saturday, November 22nd, 11 AM at the funeral home, 1411 Vintage Lane (Between 390 & Long Pond Rd.). Immediately following, he will be laid to rest in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Humane Society at Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Rd., Fairport, NY 14450, or in his memory.
Remembering Edward Matarazzo
Edward "Ed" Matarazzo was born on March 18, 1939, in Rochester, New York, to Elizabeth Matarazzo, a hardworking woman who spent many years employed at Star Market and was well-known for her wonderful cooking. Ed grew up in a close-knit family with his sister Joann, to whom he remained devoted throughout his life, and his brother Peter, whose loss in the Vietnam War deeply affected him.
Ed attended Rochester city schools in his early years, later moving on to Charlotte High School and Jefferson High School. While school wasn't his favorite, he had a curious mind that found its home in reading later in life. He became an avid reader with a special love for history-his shelves eventually filled with thousands of books.
As a young man, Ed took on many odd jobs, including working at Schaller's, before joining the Army, where he proudly earned his GED and spent time stationed in Germany. After returning home, he began what would become a 30-year career at Rochester Products, where he tested carburetors and later fuel injectors. His reliability, skill, and work ethic earned him the respect of his coworkers-many of whom remained his close friends long after retirement.
It was through a mutual friend named Anne that Ed met the love of his life, Patricia "Pat," who would become his lifelong partner and greatest influence. The two were married on July 8, 1967, and together built a loving family, raising their two children, Ann Marie and Ed. Family was the heart of everything Ed did. He worked tirelessly to provide, protect, and be present-never missing a game, recital, or concert for his grandchildren, Haleigh, Ryan, and Maddi.
Each year, the family looked forward to their cherished trips to Anna Maria Island, Florida, to visit Pat's mother. These visits became treasured memories, filled with sunshine, laughter, and the deep sense of togetherness that defined the Matarazzo family.
Ed had a deep affection for animals and nature. Over the years, his home was filled with life-dogs named Winkie, Max, Ollie, and Charlie; cats Tigger and Mittens; fish tanks full of tropical and saltwater fish; and even lizards, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and guinea pigs. He often took in pets from others who could no longer care for them, always opening his heart and home.
When he wasn't tending to his pets or garden, Ed could be found reading, fishing, or watching the birds outside his window. He had a soft spot for country music-especially the classics like Willie Nelson-and enjoyed relaxing with documentaries about history or nature. A lifelong fan of the Buffalo Bills, New York Yankees, and NASCAR, Ed appreciated the simple pleasures of cheering on his favorite teams.
Ed and Pat shared a wonderful circle of friends-Anne and Fred, Timmy and Mary Ann, Ceil, Joe, and Jay-and together they enjoyed going out to dinner, often at the Grove House. Though he loved good food, Ed never developed a taste for Mexican dishes or tacos. After retirement, he especially looked forward to his monthly breakfasts with former coworkers, where they shared stories and laughter that kept their long-standing bonds strong.
A quiet, kind, and deeply caring man, Ed lived his life as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a caregiver by nature-always putting others first, especially as Pat's health declined. He found it difficult when aging limited his ability to care for her the way he wanted, but his love for her never wavered. Married for 58 years, their partnership was the cornerstone of his life, and he longed to be reunited with her after she passed.
Ed's legacy is one of hard work, loyalty, and love. He built a life centered on family, friendship, and quiet strength. Whether reading a good book, cheering from the sidelines at a grandchild's game, or simply sharing a peaceful evening with Pat, Ed found joy in the people and moments that mattered most. Those who knew him will remember him as a kind and gentle soul-devoted, dependable, and deeply loved.
