He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he was trained as a helicopter mechanic before his honorable discharge for hardship to care for the family farm.
On July 18, 1959, he married Mary Louise Coleman, his wife of 62 years. Upon his graduation from Edinboro State College in 1960, he taught science at Rowe High School in Conneaut, OH before beginning his career as a railroad conductor. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting deer and fishing the Great Lakes for walleye, salmon, and steelhead with friends and family. Ed also achieved a lifelong dream of catching a 120-pound tarpon in Boca Grande, Florida with his son. In addition to hunting and fishing, he cherished time watching his grandchildren play baseball and perform on stage, as well as spending time with his cats, Sky and Callie.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Coleman) Minch; his son, Mark Minch, Mark's wife Dawnielle, and his grandchildren Logan and Emily Minch, as well as many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
