Edward Anthony Pommier, "Honest ED", age 78, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, in the St. Cloud VA Medical Center. He was born on July 30, 1946, in Currie, MN, the son of Elsie (Gustaf) and Gerald Pommier.
Ed spent many hours woodworking, creating different kinds of bird houses, custom clocks, garden stakes, rain gauges, plant potholders, fish shaped fishing pole holders and more. His clocks were all stamped with his woodworking name, "Honest Ed'. He proudly passed his love and knowledge of woodworking on to his great-grandson, Jacob. Ed was to be found working in his shop on something most of the time.
Ed loved traveling to Boeckers' Farm to visit as often as possible. He loved pulling the tall grasses and feeding the cattle and goats. Ed was animal lover of all kinds.
Ed loved to watch NASCAR on Sundays. He was a Dale Earnhardt fan. He liked to go to Elko Speedway with many of his co-workers and watch the local races. Dirt track racing was also a favorite. Ed raced in a car he and a friend built.
Baseball was Ed's favorite sport, he loved to watch the MN Twins on tv. He collected many baseball cards and caps over the years. He played fastpitch softball for many years. A caricature of him with the alias, "Fast Pitch Eddie" hung in his apartment.
In Ed's recent years, he was the President of the YAH (Young at Heart) Club of Longville, MN. He enjoyed playing cribbage and 500 with members of the club and serving the information booth during the summer. He occasionally called the numbers at BINGO night. He made many friends during his membership of the Club, they even took a yearly Club trip to Northern Lights Casino in Walker, MN. Ed also enjoyed going to NLC on Tuesdays, as it was "Senior Day," playing the Powerball lottery, and always had to "throw the bones" when he visited Louisianna.
Ed loved duck hunting and fishing in his younger years. He built an icehouse, which one could argue was an ice castle, equipped with bunkbeds, bathroom, stove, table, chairs, TV, VCR, homemade rattle reels with jingle bells inside, hearing them slowly jingle then suddenly take off like crazy are some of the best memories he shared with his grandchildren. Ed took his kids fishing and camping, in a massive tent made of canvas.
Ed's favorite holiday was Christmas, and he made it magical for his grandkids. He'd take them to go look at Christmas lights and when they'd return, Santa had been there! Every year, Ed chose 1 lucky person who had to hunt for their gift, often, the unwrapping of the finally located gift included a hammer or a saw. Ed will be greatly missed by all who knew him as dad, grandpa/pawpaw, great-grandpa, brother, uncle, or friend.
Ed was preceded in death by his father, Gerald Pommier; mother, Elsie Thuftedal; and stepfather, Ralph Thuftedal.
Ed is survived by son, Andy (Carrie) Ordway; daughters, Brenda Berg, Jennifer Canter, Bridgette Hunter; brother, Tom (Barb) Pommier; sisters, Helen Pommier, Kathy (Jim) Ostvig, Mary Pommier-Claussen; grandchildren, Steph (Cory), Mat (Megan), C.J. (Christa), Nate, Allyson (Daniel), Lathan (Brittany), Lauren (Blake), Landon (Kami); and 16 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Honest Ed's Life will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at The Young at Heart Senior Club, 150 Pond Lane, Longville, MN. Urn bearers are all of Ed's grandchildren. Honorary urn bearers are all of Ed's great-grandchildren. Military honors are to be held at a later family service TBD.
The family wishes to send a special Thanks to the entire staffs at: the St. Cloud VA and Hospice Teams, Assumption Community, Centracare St. Cloud Hospital, and the YAH Club Friends.
Ed's care has been entrusted to Northern Peace Funeral Home of Walker, MN. Online condolences for the family may be left at www.northernpeace.com
