James Edward Spurling, known affectionately as Edward to his friends and family, passed away on January 18, 2026, at the age of 84, in the peaceful town of
San Marcos, Texas. Born on August 9, 1941, in the quaint community of
Turtletown, Tennessee, Edward lived a full and vibrant life marked by dedication to his family, his country, and his passion for the land.
Edward's early years were spent in the rolling hills of Tennessee where he graduated from Copper Hill High School, fostering a love for learning and community that would stay with him throughout his life. After high school, he answered the call of duty and served with honor in the United States Army, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a profound sense of patriotism.
Upon returning to civilian life, Edward embarked on a fulfilling career as a Locomotive Engineer with Northfork Southern Railway. For 37 years, he was known among his colleagues for his reliability, skill, and the warm camaraderie he brought to every shift. His work on the railways was a source of pride and joy, and his stories from the tracks were a staple at family gatherings.
In his later years, Edward found solace in the rhythms of nature, turning to farming in Benton, Tennessee. His hands, always skilled and creative, tended the earth with care, coaxing life from the soil and sharing the fruits of his labor with all who knew him. Beekeeping was another of Edward's passions, a testament to his patience and his fascination with the intricacies of nature.
Edward was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church in Benton. His faith was a quiet, steady force in his life, guiding his actions and his relationships with those around him. He lived his beliefs through acts of kindness and a commitment to his community that was evident to all who had the pleasure of crossing his path.
Edward's defining traits-his handiness, creativity, and loving nature-were evident in every aspect of his life. He was a man who could fix a broken machine with ease, devise innovative solutions to complex problems, and, above all, offer a shoulder of support and a listening ear to anyone in need.
His loving wife of 19 years, Christine Spurling, remained a beacon of love and partnership throughout their lives together. His daughters, Kristi Pennell, and her husband, Joe, and Jessica Spurling, were the pride of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. His grandchildren, Joey and Emily Pennell and partner, Chatham Ellwanger, and great-grandson, Charlie Pennell, brought him immeasurable joy and were the recipients of his boundless affection and life lessons.
Edward leaves behind a sister, Marlie Price, who will miss his guidance and warmth. He was preceded in death by his sister, Florence Deal, and brothers, Glenn and Larry Spurling, with whom he now rests in peace.
As we bid farewell to Edward Spurling, we remember a man whose legacy is etched in the hearts and lives of those he touched. A pillar of strength, a reservoir of wisdom, and a source of unconditional love, Edward's memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Though he has left our sight, the essence of who he was remains an indelible part of our lives. We take solace in knowing that his spirit is now free, roaming the eternal fields he so dearly loved.
