Edward Stood Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Palmer Funeral Homes - Welsheimer Chapel-North on Mar. 2, 2026.
Edward Werner Stood, passed away on February 27, 2026, at the age of 86 in Mishawaka, Indiana. Born on December 12, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois, Ed was the cherished son of the late Werner and Frances (Cartwright) Stood. His life was a testament to the values of dedication, service, and the joy of family.

Ed's journey through life was shared with his beloved wife, Margaret (Peggy) (Rotkvic) Stood, married October 22, 1960 in Hammond, IN, who was his partner in every sense of the word. They celebrated 65 years of marriage this past fall. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter and raised three wonderful daughters: Denise (Erik) Adelsen, Lyons, CO; Cheryl (Timothy) Hazlett, Lees Summit, MO; and Elizabeth (Michael) Evans, Cypress, TX. Ed's legacy continues through his six adoring grandchildren; Ashleigh (Justin) Kemp, Brice (Crystal) Slamann, Timothy "Jack" (Kylie) Hazlett, Hayden Evans, Ethan Hazlett, Vivian Evans, and great grandchildren; Reagan and Rhett Kemp and Brady Hazlett, who all will cherish and miss his wisdom and gentle humor. He leaves behind his loving sisters, Nancy (Russell) Cawthon and Dolores Bailiff, who will fondly remember their brother for his kindness and steadfast presence in their lives.

A man of service, Ed dedicated six years of his life to the Army National Guard, where he honed his skills in precision and attention to detail. These traits served him well in his civilian career of 37 years as a Senior Auditor for NIPSCO, where he was respected by his colleagues for his integrity and work ethic. He attended Northern Illinois University and was a graduate of The New York Institute of Photography.

As President of the Portage, Indiana Jaycees, a member of the Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary, he demonstrated his belief in civic responsibility and the power of community involvement. His leadership and enthusiasm inspired many to give back to their communities. Ed was dedicated to his church by faithfully serving on Sunday mornings as well as holding the position of Secretary on the Council for Christ the King Lutheran Church. One of his proudest contributions was in the establishment of the church's columbarium.

Ed's family, friends, and all who were touched by his compassionate spirit will feel the absence of his warm smile and generous heart.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 PM on Sunday March 8 at Palmer Funeral Homes, Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635.

Funeral Services for Ed will be held at 11 AM Monday March 9 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 17195 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN 46635 with visitation one hour prior to the service.
