Edward Venter Obituary

Edward Venter passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, in Annapolis, Maryland, at the age of 76. Born in Teaneck, New Jersey, on June 7, 1948, Edward lived a full life defined by a lifelong fascination with all things above the Earth-and on it. A graduate of Bradley University in 1970 with a degree in Mechanical Technology, Edward took his talents to the stars-literally. He began his career at Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, California, where he "flew satellites" for the U.S. Air Force. Later, he moved east to Maryland to contribute to one of the most iconic scientific instruments of our time: the Hubble Space Telescope. As a manager of flight operations and later testing, Edward was a proud part of the team that brought space closer to all of us. Outside of work, Edward enjoyed life's simpler (and sweeter) pleasures-ice cream, nightly rounds of Jeopardy!, and good music. A coin collector by habit and a hobbyist by heart, Edward had a rotating cast of pastimes over the years, including vegetable gardening (in his backyard or virtually on Farmville), woodworking, and just about anything that struck his interest for a season or two. He was a regular at the local Moose Lodge, where he shared plenty of laughs and wine with friends who became like family. Edward is survived by his three children, Jen, Melissa, and Michael; their mother, Sue; his brother, Robert; and many fond memories of his late sister, Gladys. He will be cremated, and his ashes will be cared for at Lasting Tributes Funeral Home in Annapolis. He'll be dearly missed and fondly remembered. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Edward's memory to the ASPCA to honor his love for his canine companions or the Alzheimer's Association in honor of his late sister.

Ed was a great guy. My first boss at LM, and a very friendly and honest man and mentor. I have great memories of him and am sorry to hear of his passing.

Ed - such a lovely man - have many memories of working together on HST. He was so kind and fair to everyone. I´ll always remember the delicious tomatoes he loved to grow and share.
Rest in peace.

Ed hired me on to the Hubble Space Telescope project in April 1991 fresh out of college. The interview was quite interesting. I had been working in NASA´s parts analysis department, and we were in the process of moving our lab from GSFC to Lanham MD when I got the call from Ed, asking if I could come in for an interview. It was just a few buildings away, but I was not dressed for an interview and quite dusty. Ed didn´t mind at all and said it would be ok. There was Ed in a suit, tie and sport coat and me in dirty jeans and a T-shirt. I later found that, with Ed´s laid-back nature, he may have been more uncomfortable in a suit than me showing up for a job interview all dirty and dusty. Ed hired me and it turned into a 34 year+ career on the HST program. In my interactions, I found Ed to have a calm, and kind spirit. He managed in a way that led us to get the job done without resorting to a heavy hand.

Thank you, Ed. You will be missed and always remembered.
