Edward Kimmons Weaver Jr. more affectionately known as "Kim" or "Weaver Boy" was born on November 26, 1950 in
Longview, Texas to Geneva Ferguson Weaver and Dr. Edward Kimmons Weaver Sr.
During his adolescent years Edward traveled to Africa with his parents and spent a year and a half living in Nigeria. They later moved to
Atlanta, GA. He attended Oglethorpe Elementary School and graduated from Harper High School in 1968. He was a star on the football team. Edward furthered his education by attending Morehouse College where he played varsity football and was on the swim team. After two years he transferred to North Carolina A&T University where he earned his Bachelor's degree, he also played varsity football and graduated in 1972. He moved back to Atlanta where he completed a Masters Degree in Administrative Education from Atlanta University in 1973.
While working on his Master's degree Edward played professional football with the Birmingham Americans for a short period. Shortly after Edward reverted back to Islam where he earned his X and was a part of the Fruits of Islam (FOI).
Edward married his best friend and the love of his life, or as he referred to her, "wife for life", Sloan Chandler Weaver ("Candy"). They met at a football game while both were in high school and married in Gainesville, GA on October 29, 1974. His love for family was strong, with people joking that if you saw him you saw his wife and his kids were not far behind.
Edward began his coaching career and coached football at Benjamin E. Mays High School and Morris Brown. While at Morris Brown coaching football Edward ran the aquatics department where he held the first Pinky Haynes swim meet. Edward worked for the City of Atlanta Parks and Recreation in the Aquatics department starting in high school and throughout his early adult life. He was passionate about swimming and education. Edward's passion for swimming gave him the ability to assist in writing the first City Of Atlanta Aquatics manual and was the first certified African American instructor trainer (IT) with the Red Cross. He taught numerous African-Americans not only to swim, but helped them to become lifeguards. He started his career teaching swimming at Kennedy High School and Morris Brown College. Throughout his adult life he taught Physical Education at numerous Atlanta Public Schools. He was beloved wherever he went.
He was a member of Temple 15 where he earned his X which is now the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam.
He transitioned from this earth as a true muslim believer with no fear on Monday August 21, 2023 after battling a long term illness. Benefactors of his rich legacy of love and service are his wife, Sloan Chandler Weaver ("Candy"); children, Geneva Louise Weaver, Edward Kimmons Weaver III (Little Kim), Surah Genvieve Ruth Weaver, and Elijah Kareem Weaver (Ayesha Muhammad); grandchildren, Edward Jihad Weaver (EJ), London Aishah Weaver-Moreland, MaryElla McCord-Weaver, and Iman Sloan Weaver; and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be a Janazah prayer on Thursday, August 23 at 2pm at The Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam. Repass will be directly at 4pm at The ATlanta Masjid of Al-Islam.
